News & Updates from DKT
August 2022
Dear Friend of DKT,
This month's newsletter highlights just a few examples of the rich, important work that DKT does every day to increase access to high quality, affordable contraceptives, safe abortion technology, and accurate, timely information for consumers. From our new vasectomy clinic in Mexico to educational activities in India and Indonesia, DKT International puts clients at the center of our decision-making. New condom advertisements in Brazil and Pakistan, along with sex education in Vietnam, focus on pleasure, fun, and healthy approaches to sexuality. Finally, we are proud of the decision by the Ministry of Health of DR Congo to allow provision of implants and injectable contraceptives in pharmacies this will pave the way for DKT to train providers on these methods and increase access.

As always, please feel free to contact me or anyone at DKT about our work.

Cheers,

Christopher Purdy
President
Contraceptive implants and injectables can now be provided in pharmacies in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The General Secretary of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced the government’s decision to allow contraceptive implants and injectables in pharmacies. These new guidelines will advance national progress towards international Sustainable Development Goals of achieving universal access in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and reducing maternal deaths. Local pharmacies are often the closest and most convenient resource for contraception, and therefore are integral to improving health outcomes. The DRC Ministry of Health’s new decision will greatly expand access and build on DKT DRC’s efforts to train pharmacists to offer youth-friendly SRH services in more than 1,000 partner pharmacies in the country.

DKT tackles maternal mortality in rural Indonesia with the Andalan IUD campaign
DKT Indonesia held a far-reaching campaign “Kampoeng Andalan” in the village of Cikajang, Garut, West Java – a remote area with high rates of maternal mortality. Throughout the month of June, villagers in the underserved community received free contraceptive injections, increased distribution coverage, and contraceptive awareness training through collaborations with 20 midwives from 13 villages. Individuals were trained to mobilize demand for sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and were counseled about their contraceptive options. Villagers also benefited from renovations to their basic health facilities, including receiving new hand-washing basins and medical equipment. On the final day, participants took part in a talk show to educate the community about the importance of family planning.

The various events were covered by regional and national television stations, online news outlets and a radio show. Here are some clips from RCTI TV and PJTV.
