"By Faith"

Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

The Bible challenges us to “live by faith” time and again. But what is the nature of that faith,

especially when we see time and again in scripture that the contents of faith change and then change

again in the lives of the most faithful?

About Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks

The Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks, or Chuck as he prefers to be called, was born in New Orleans, but grew up in Ocala, Florida.

Chuck received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. He then attended seminary

at Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago earning his Master of Divinity degree. There he met

Becca Kutz who would join him in marriage in 1979. Later he earned a Doctor of Ministry from

Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit.

In December of 2005, he began serving as Sr. Minister of University Christian Church in Austin

where he is still an active member. In 2019, he retired from full time pastoral ministry.

Chuck’s outside of church interests include cooking, astronomy (a member of the Austin

Astronomical Society), amateur radio, raised-bed vegetable gardening, Texas history, and travel

trailering.

Chuck and Becca have two children, David, and Marie, and five grandchildren.

From Anna Marie...

Looking for the Best by Fanny Lee Seville

Luke 12.35-40

At the end of town, in a little white brick house, lived a friendly, kind widower. This particular evening he sat quietly contemplating his life. He was baptized Marvin Martin III, but most folk called him M&M. He had lived all of his life in this house. It was here that he was born. It was here that many happy remembrances occurred. And it was here that he experienced the magnificent birth of his baby sister. The angelic expression on his mother's face when she held her daughter for the first time remained vividly in his memory. Often he recalled with joy the good times he shared with his family until that fateful day when they were taken from him in an automobile accident. His mother's sister graciously quit her job and came to live with him. She was a warm, loving woman, and treated him like her own son.

Tonight, as M&M opened the Bible for his evening devotions, he smiled and thought his life was very good. After his prayers he wrote in his black book. Then he went to bed. During the night, he fell into a very deep sleep from which he never awoke.

Marvin's pastor began his memorial service with these words: "Today, we gather to remember the life of Marvin Martin III, affectionately called M&M. He was the kindliest man I have ever known. His was a life lived for others. Permit me, please, to share with you the last seven entries in M&M's diary." Taking Marvin's black book in hand, his pastor read:

Sunday: Looking for the best in others.

Today, Pastor read from the Gospel of Luke, 12.35-40, about being ready for Jesus' return. I believe I am ready. Before church this morning, I spoke with Jan about my visiting with her kindergarten class tomorrow. She's expecting me. After worship I served coffee at coffee hour. It gave me great pleasure to ask the people "Decaf or regular?" I loved seeing the appreciative expressions on the faces of those enjoying my freshly baked cupcakes and homemade peanut butter fudge. I especially enjoyed watching Pastor hold a six-year-old child with cerebral palsy. Her head nestled under his chin as he lovingly held her in his arms. The scene reminded me of Jesus' telling his disciples to let the children come to him. Thank you, God, for pastors who care for everyone.

Monday: Looking for the best in others.

Today is my 81st birthday. To celebrate I baked sugar cookies, decorated each one with a happy face, and took them to Jan's kindergarten class. Tears filled my eyes as the children sang "Happy Birthday" to me. After reading several stories to them, I said good-bye and gave each child a hug. Jan loves teaching. Her eyes sparkled with tender, loving kindness. I think it's commendable that she uses her own money to buy supplies for her classroom. Every day after school, she volunteers to tutor students with learning difficulties. She is a very dedicated teacher. I wish all teachers possessed her commitment. Thank you, God, for teachers who care.

Tuesday: Looking for the best in others.

At noon today, I served lunch at the soup kitchen. It seems each week there are more and more people without a home. I pray for their safety. Tonight on the evening news, I heard the most amazing story. An NBA basketball player created a line of athletic shoes costing only $15 a pair, so that poor children could have the pleasure of wearing new shoes. I applaud his compassion and concern for these children whose parents don't have $100 or more to pay for trendy basketball shoes. Thank you, God, for people who care.

Wednesday: Looking for the best in others.

This week I am scheduled to make Called-to-Care visits. Today I visited John. Yesterday he was hit by a car. John had the courage to save a little boy who had wandered into the street. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but John suffered a broken leg. I think my peanut butter fudge helped to cheer him. Thank you, God, for courageous people.

Thursday: Looking for the best in others.

I missed rehearsal with the Senior Singers today. Next Thursday we sing at the nursing home. I'm so grateful that I can live independently. Thank you, God, for my good health. Instead of singing, I traveled with Joe to a home where floodwaters had filled the basement of a widow's home. I stand in awe of Joe. His commitment to others is one to be emulated. No matter where the need, be it in Florida or Mississippi or Louisiana or Pennsylvania or North Dakota, there is Joe, leading a disaster response team. Thank you, God, for people who care.

Friday: Looking for the best in others.

In the mail today was a letter from Chip, thanking me for the 100 blankets I mailed to him in Iraq. He said all his buddies appreciated receiving a new, clean, warm blanket. I'm so proud of my grandson for serving our country, but I'm frightened for his safety and for the lives of others serving in the military. I hate war. It seems that every decade of my life the United States has been in some kind of military conflict. I pray for world peace. Thank you, God, for those who protect us.

Saturday: Looking for the best in others.

I'm rather tired tonight. Most of the day I worked with members of the church, helping to build a Habitat for Humanity home. My church friends are always ready to lend a hand whenever there is a need. Our church is blessed to have many committed members. Thank you, God, for the Church.

"And so it was with Marvin Martin III, always looking for the best in others when in reality it was we who saw his good works." M&M's pastor wiped tears from his eyes as he continued, "When his blessed Savior came, Marvin was ready. One can imagine Jesus saying, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.' "

Thanks be to God for folk like Marvin who are always ready to help others cheerfully and willingly, no matter who they are, no matter what their need may be.

Disciple Mens Retreat

Greetings from Heavenly Hot Houston.

This is a reminder of our Christian Church in the Southwest's annual regional Disciples Men's retreat on Friday evening, September 16 through Sunday morning worship on September 18th.

Attached HERE is a summary retreat schedule for the weekend.

Can you recall one of your most memorable spiritual experiences? I would imagine that a retreat or something like a Walk to Amaeus would come to mind. It does for me. And, I will always remember one of our past regional men's presidents, Tom Brown describing his experience at this retreat when he would tell people, "It is such a wonderful spiritual experience standing side by side with our men at Lake Brownwood singing Amazing Grace!"

Another good experience a man takes from this retreat is the one shared by bringing a new attendee to Lake Brownwood. True Discipleship is something passed along to someone else. We have a basic need to share discipleship. What other event exists that can better help us build discipling relationships with someone else, other than our annual Disciples Men retreat at Lake Brownwood? Inviting men to come and encouraging them to bring someone else gets us back to our basic calling 'to go and make disciples.' After all, you've got to be one before you can make one.

These men's retreats are more than just a time to be away from our home settings and families. More importantly, it is a time when we get the opportunity to reconnect with God at a level that goes beyond what we usually experience at our home churches. Also, it is the only time each year when all men get the opportunity to fellowship at a Regional level.

Retreat information with pictures and bios of our keynote speakers are displayed on our CCSW web site along with online Eventbrite Registration forms.

Please click on this web site to register and join us. www.ccsw.org/men

May God guide you to discover one of those memorable spiritual experiences.

Blessings and peace,

The theme for Assembly this year is “Reconnecting Community." Reconnecting Community will RE-Member our common ground in God’s grace, Re-Ignite our passion for collaboration and connection, and Re-Focus our attention to the call God has placed before us beyond all that the last two years has given us. The Christian Church in the Southwest is poised to reconnect our communities and imagine what the future will hold.

Our October 14, 2022 daytime schedule (pre-assembly) will include a CCSW Learn: Congregational Care (in person only), a 6-hour workshop on Congregational Care led by Rev. Dr. Dara Cobb-Lewis. Dr. Cobb-Lewis has been a congregational minister, Regional Minister in South Carolina, and maintains a private pastoral counseling ministry. The workshop will focus on how congregational leaders can care for their congregations and ministries as a whole while also attending to the personal well-being of individual members. Courses in Healthy Boundaries (online and in person) and Pro-Reconciliation/Anti-Racism (online and in person). In the evening, we will be led in worship by the Texas Christian Missionary Fellowship.

Saturday, October 15, 2022, will include morning prayer, the consecration of our Regional Youth Ministry Council, an All-Assembly “Reconnecting Community” conversation, Workshops, Business meeting and closing worship.

This is both an IN PERSON and ONLINE event. You are encouraged to participate IN PERSON at Central Christian Church, San Antonio TX or you can participate from the comfort of your own home, or wherever is easiest for you!

Everyone is welcome and invited to participate in all that is happening during assembly. Don’t worry if this is your first time, or your 100th time – you are welcome and are an important part of the Region.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

Water From the Rock

Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.

-- Psalm 50:23

Psalm 50 complements the passage from Isaiah that is critical of people who perform the acts of worship but do not allow their acts of worship to shape their daily lives. Psalm 50 is a vision of judgment centered on the relation between worship and ethics. Verses 1-6 describe the judge and his authority. God is the mighty one who summons the earth (v. 1) and the heavens (v. 4), who serve as the jury (v. 6). God is the chief witness (v. 7).

In verses 8-13, the sham of sacrifices as a religious act separated from daily life is exposed. It is not that people are neglecting the act of worship. "Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me." The psalmist then proceeds to mock their sacrifices. "If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine." Verses 14-15 describe what God wants from the faithful as they come before him in worship. God wants them to bring a sacrifice of thanksgiving, to fulfill their commitments made in their covenant relationship, and to call on God in times of trouble. Instead, what God sees are people who are good at reciting God's law and speaking of their covenant relationship with God (v. 16) but who refuse to be disciplined by God's word in their lives (v. 17).

The parallel today would be people who quote the Bible in their speech and publicly brag about their church membership but who refuse to allow God's expectations to shape their daily lives. The psalmist suggests that their daily lives violate such commandments as those against stealing, adultery, false witness, and honoring their parents (vv. 18-20). If you were to identify which commandments are most frequently broken in our everyday lives, which ones would you choose?

God has given time for people to recognize their own evil, but they have taken God's silence as approval of separating their words of worship from the ethics of their lives (v. 21). God's judgment is now pronounced. Yet, God's judgment is always another opportunity to repent and live a life of thanksgiving and salvation. The invitation is to let the times when we are obedient to God at personal sacrifice be a sign of our worship and praise.
