Spin for a Cause with F&H Fitness!
Come on out to the Midnight Sun Festival to support the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at AKBH!!

F&H Fitness is hosting their popular Spin for a Cause event, and our Cohen Clinic is one of the beneficiaries. Alaska Behavioral Health will also be there with info and clinicians available.

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Alaska Behavioral Health provides confidential, high-quality behavioral healthcare services and local resource connection to post-9/11 veterans (including National Guard and Reserves), their families, active duty service members and the families of active duty service members, which includes spouse or partner, children, parents, siblings, caregivers, and others.

Services are available regardless of discharge status, role while in uniform, combat experience, ability to pay or insurance. Learn more here.
Interns and AKBH: The learning goes both ways!
Occupational Therapy Intern
In Spring 2022, Alaska Behavioral Health hosted its first Occupational Therapy student intern. Baylee Bartgis spent 14 weeks working with our Child and Family Team in Anchorage for her senior capstone project, just before graduating from Creighton University. She focused on sensory processing, and brought new perspectives and techniques to our Child & Family clinical team. Read more about Baylee's Internship here.

Alaska Behavioral Health hosts graduate level interns and practicum students in a variety of fields. Learn more about student internship options here.
Partial Hospitalization Programs for Adults & Children
This week, we launched our children's partial hospitalization program (PHP) in Anchorage!

Our staff were excited by the opportunity to support clients in new ways. Clinical Associate Kathryn Fisher:

"It has been a blast creating and implementing different ideas to foster creative learning.
With each skill presented, we have tried to incorporate a game or art project. By doing this, it allows for the clients to add their own personal touches to their learning and healing process. Having this program allows Alaska Behavioral Health to serve a greater part of our community. We are eager and excited to see this program flourish in the upcoming weeks and months. "

Partial Hospitalization Programs are intensive short-term programs, including:
  • Medication management with twice-weekly check-ins with medical providers
  • Group therapy using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills
  • Mindfulness activities and other skill-building
  • Physical activity
  • Lunch provided

The programs are designed to address mood disorders, such as depression, bipolar, and anxiety, and they have rolling admissions. One of our goals with our PHP programs for both Adults and Children is next-day access, so that clients experiencing severe symptoms don't have to wait to feel better. After an initial intake appointment, clients can usually start the program the following day.

E-mail PHP@akbh.org with specific questions or to request an intake.
Recap: 9th Annual Alaska Advanced Trauma Training Institute
More than 200 Alaskans attended last week's 9th Annual Alaska Advanced Trauma Training Institute in Anchorage!

Two days of speakers and workshops addressed the trauma experiences of children and adults, strengthening caregiver engagement in trauma treatment with Dr. Jon Ebert, and using CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) to address trauma with model-developer Dr. Kathleen Chard. Therapy dogs made an appearance. One highlight was hearing from local business owner Derrick Green of Waffles and Whatnot, an advocate for veteran suicide prevention who openly shares his own experiences with trauma.

Attendees will receive up to 10 continuing education units for attending the conference: watch your inbox for details!
Photo Gallery: Celebrating Transition Age Youth at a Block Par-TAY!
We had a blast celebrating young people in our community and programs that help address youth mental health at our first-ever Block ParTAY on June 9th!

We were joined by Spirit of Youth, Mental Health Advocacy Through Storytelling, West High School's You Are Not Alone club, the Anchorage Health Department, the Ida’ina K’eljeshna dancers, and Alaska's 2022 High School All State Jazz Ensemble. With great tunes, great food from Pikiniki and Yeti Dogs, games and sunshine, tours of the brand-new POWER Center and Alaska Seeds of Change, and corn hole, giant jenga and more, there was something for everyone. Thanks to everyone who came out to join us!
A huge thank you to the sponsors who made this event possible!
