DEAR CAREER COACH
English is not my first language. How do I combat language barriers at work?
First of all, you deserve to be commended on your hard work! Knowing two or more languages increases the value you can bring to an organization. But, if you find some challenges along the way, here are some ideas to help you:

  1.  Work with a colleague to learn the lingo (special vocabulary) for your job. Knowing common abbreviations and even metaphors used in your field can help you feel more confident.
  2. Download Grammarly, which makes recommendations for grammar and synonyms that will make your writing simpler, correct, and professional.
  3. Communicate your concerns to your supervisor. If you feel that you are not being treated equally due to language barriers, you can ask your employer to have training about language barrier prevention. If you feel that you have experienced discrimination, you can also speak to your Human Resources department.
GOING REMOTE
Helping your team come up with remote onboarding ideas? Start with these:
  • Send a welcome package before the new hire’s start date
  • Recreate in-office experiences virtually
  • Provide a list of key stake holders
  • Have current employees create introduction videos
  • Pair the new hire with a buddy

IMPOSTER SYNDROME
Do you have this internal struggle?
Viewing yourself as an “imposter” can impair how you interact with others and can impact your ability to perform your job duties effectively and efficiently. It can be a debilitating and frustrating experience.
