Congregational Meeting
Sunday, October 17

The Congregation of Highland Presbyterian Church will have a called meeting on Sunday, October 17, 2021 for the purposes of: considering a Servitude Agreement with America Homeland, developer of the adjoining property; appointing Margaret Louise Dye to act as the agent of the church in signing this agreement if approved; voting on nominees presented by the Nominating Committee for Elders to the Class of 2024; and voting on nominees presented by the Nominating Committee for members of the Congregation to serve on the 2022 Nominating Committee. Copies of the servitude agreement will be available for pick-up before worship on Sunday, September 26.

Mission Opportunity
Bread Pick-up and Drop-off

Highland has a new Mission project for you! Once-a-week we will pick-up donated bread from Our Daily Bread (9414 Florida Blvd) and deliver it to the Shepherd’s Market Food Pantry of St. John’s UMC on Highland Road. If you would like to help, Barb Pfeifer (225) 363-6204 will be scheduling volunteers to handle the pick-up/drop off.

Session
News
  • Session approved hiring Dalina Merchant to help with maintenance of flower beds surrounding the sanctuary and the administration buildings. Ms. Merchant will be compensated at a rate of $15.00 an hour for 10 hours each month August 2021 – January 2022 (6 months).
  • Session received a report from the Ad Hoc Property Committee concerning the Servitude Agreement with America Homeland. The committee in conjunction with Mr. Patrick Miller, Attorney at Law and President of Preferred Title Company, felt that the Agreement presented was acceptable to Highland Presbyterian Church. A Called Congregational Meeting will be scheduled for Congregational consideration of the Servitude Agreement.
  • Session approved calling a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, October 17, 2021, following Worship for the purposes of: considering the Servitude Agreement received from America Homeland, appointing Margaret Louise Dye to act as the agent of the church in signing this agreement if approved, voting on nominees presented by the Nominating Committee for Elders to the Class of 2024, and voting on nominees presented by the Nominating Committee for members of the Congregation to serve on the 2022 Nominating Committee.
  • Session approved initiating a new Mission project. The project consists of once-a-week pick-up of donated bread from Our Daily Bread (9414 Florida Blvd) and delivering it to the Shepherd’s Market Food Pantry of St. John’s UMC on Highland Road. Mission Committee Chair Barb Pfeifer will be responsible for securing and scheduling volunteers to handle the pick-up.
  • Session approved receiving an Offering for Heifer International on Sunday, November 14, 2021.
  • Session approved allocating $250.00 from Other Benevolences (520200) to the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge in honor Rev. Jeff Day’s 80th Birthday.


Committee Reports

Clerk of Session - Membership
  • Former member Shelby Brown passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at the age of 91. Mr. Brown lived in Christwood Retirement Community in Covington, La.

Pastor's Report
  • Pastor Jeff Day will be on vacation September 28 - October 13, 2021.

Christian Education & Congregational Care
  • Homebound members continue to be contacted on a regular basis.
  • Contact with members was maintained during hurricane Ida.
  • Lagniappe Ladies met August 11 at Drusilla Seafood and September 20 at City Pork. A future meeting is scheduled for October 20 at Mis Padres in Prairieville.

Evangelism/Membership
  • The average attendance for July was 19. The average attendance for August was 18. There were no visitors in July and three visitors in August.

Finance
  • For the month of July, income of $9,876.12 exceeded expenses of $3,036.42 by $6,839.70.
  • For the month of August, income of $22,252.12 exceeded expenses of $9,760.22 by $12,691.90.
  • The Stewardship Campaign for 2021 will consist of a letter and pledge card being sent to every household of Highland Presbyterian Church. Pledge Cards will be collected Sunday, November 21, 2021 – Commitment Sunday.

Missions
  • The Peace and Global Witness Offering will be received on Sunday, October 3, 2021 – World Communion Sunday. A Minute for Mission concerning the Offering will be presented on Sunday, September 26, 2021.
  • The Committee recommended adding the weekly pick up of donated bread from Our Daily Bread to HPC’s food collection project. Barbara Pfeifer will handle the scheduling/pickup process.

Property
  • A generous donation was received from a member of HPC to help with issues involving upkeep of the church property. Needs will be discussed to facilitate the best use of these funds.
