Coach's Mentoring Network
2022 is the year we build our network of mentors for Pacific Masters swim coaches. There will be three coaches in each Mentor Triad. One is a Gold Coach with 20+ years coaching experience, another is a Silver Coach with 10 - 19 years of coaching experience, and a third is a Bronze Coach with fewer than 9 years of experience as a swim coach. The network will cross all geographic boundaries in our LMSC.
The launch began in December, and the Mentor Triads will be put together very soon. We intend to meet at least once or twice a month throughout 2022-23. It's not too late to participate. Please register your interest and commitment here: Coaches Mentoring Network.

March 4-6, Relay 2022, Leadership Meeting
Deadline to apply: Saturday, January 15
This year, USMS is offering an exciting opportunity to USMS members. This in-person leadership gathering is called RELAY 2022 because relays are a cooperative effort as well as a lot of fun! This exciting event will take place in Denver, CO, March 4-6, 2022.
The theme of RELAY 2022 is club development with a focus on building relationships with facilities, recruiting and supporting coaches, and providing resources for clubs to grow. For detailed information and agenda, please visit the RELAY 2022 website.
Pacific Masters is looking for volunteer attendees who are current Pacific Masters members and have the interest, skills, and passion for helping to develop USMS clubs at our local level. We are particularly looking for volunteers who are eager to get involved, able to share what they learn with their peers in Pacific Masters, and preferably have not attended any previous USMS conventions or leadership meetings.
Selected attendees will have the following costs covered:
- Hotel room (double occupancy; if a single room is required, the balance will be borne by the attendee)
- Reasonable round-trip airfare to Denver
- $100 stipend to cover travel to airport, and meals not covered by USMS
If you think you would be a good fit for this leadership opportunity, we encourage you to provide a letter stating your current position, why you want to attend, and what you think you might like to do with the leadership skills and knowledge you bring back. Please send the letter of interest to [email protected], by this Saturday, January 15.

In Memoriam
Toni Wivell, 1937-2021
by Susan Loyd
On October 21, 2021, my friend and long-time Pacific Masters swimmer passed away. Toni LOVED the Masters program and participated in competitions every year up until COVID. The happiest I ever saw Toni was when she was in the water competing. Toni loved just being in the pool, as well as meeting many friends from all the different clubs competing at the swim meets.
I was always so proud of Toni and her desire to challenge herself against her peers. It did not matter what place she took, although it was usually first! Everyone at Tuolumne County will miss our friend Toni. We all have a guardian angel pushing us through the water now.

January 2022: Setting New Goals
Are You Faster Than a Fifth Grader?
Every new year brings hope and the promise of new beginnings, and this is especially true in 2022. We’re on the path to normalcy and anticipate competing in-person again at Pacific Masters events planned for this year.
Some of us may be interested to see where we stand after the disruptions of the COVID-induced hiatus. Have we improved any of our times, or tried new events? How do we stack up against everyone else? If only there were a guidepost to help set our new goals!
Let's have some fun and, referring to Jeff Foxworthy’s famous line, “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?” ask, “Are you faster than a fifth grader?”
Compare your best efforts with the qualifying times for the 2021 Qualifying Times US Junior Olympics. The 11- and 12- year-olds are most likely in the fifth grade. (This editor, using the times from our October Kerry O’Brien SCM Championship, would only have a slight chance in the 9- and 10-year-old age group. Just saying…)
For those who make the qualifying times, sincere and hearty congratulations are in order. For those who may be a bit more leisurely, do not be discouraged. All of your compatriots in Pacific Masters Swimming are here, cheering you on! Happy New Year, one and all. See you at the water’s edge!
