The Jon Manon 2021 STEAM Team Education Award
Problem Solving in the Real World
The Jon Manon STEAM Team Education Award is presented annually by DFSME to recognize a team of teachers who have collaborated within their school to achieve outstanding accomplishments, not possible without coordinated team planning and execution. The Award recognizes team collaboration within the school; administrative support for collective, interdisciplinary activities; and unique opportunities for students.

The Award recognizes the roles of the team members and provides a cash award of $1,000 for the team. This is to support projects – and publicizes to the school, district leadership, and the state the success of the team, and how the STEAM education of their students has been improved to make them more competitive in the future Delaware STEM workforce.

For more information about the submission or nomination of a project, please contact Randy Guschl guschlrj@gmail.com.
About the 2020 Jon Manon STEAM Team Education Award Winners
On March 4, 2020, during the STEM Educator Awards ceremony, the first-ever Jon Manon STEAM Team Education Award was given to an interdisciplinary team of seven teachers at William Penn High School consisting of Chris WellbornMegan BoneArmando CaroKim DavisMark McKenzieLars Jensen, and Crystal Samuels.

The team wove various concepts from the sciences, mathematics, and art into a single synthesis.
The hallmark of their lessons was to create a tangible device that tied the concepts together and gave the students an opportunity for a hands-on experience. The project helped to lead the students to a better appreciation not only of the overarching concept but to the inter-connectedness of various STEAM fields of study as well.

Learn How to Become a Nextgen Teacher
Sign up early!
This course is a big hit! This pathway encourages K-12th grade science teachers to progress beyond simply “learning about” three-dimensional learning and helps them to work with resources critical to facilitating three-dimensional learning in their own classrooms. Participants engage as learners in modeling and constructing explanations of complex phenomena just as their students will. They also learn how to use classroom tools such as productive talk and planning whole group discussions to help create a classroom culture in which all students are supported to go public with their reasoning and build on the ideas of their classmates.
Middle and High School Teachers – NEW! Oceans, Climate Change, and Big Data Course

Designed to support middle and high school teachers in growing their knowledge about the critical interactions between oceans and climate and the role of big data in helping us understand these interactions. Teachers will use tools that scientists use in collecting data on the oceans, including satellite visualizations. This pathway of professional learning is appropriate for those who teach general science, earth science, chemistry, biology and physics as well as teachers who integrate mathematics and science into their course work. This is a course you won't want to miss!

Shaping the Future of STEM
Building Equity through a High School STEM Internship Program
Join STEMconnector and STEMconnector member, Abbott,
for an engaging discussion
about Abbott’s High School STEM Internship.

Wednesday, August 4, 2021
3 - 4 PM ET

The internship demystifies what it means to work in STEM by giving students the opportunity to contribute to life-changing technologies alongside engineers and scientists who look like them.

Vildan Kehr, Divisional Vice President of HR, Rapid and Molecular Diagnostics at Abbott will provide an overview of the program, including how it became the first high school STEM internship to be recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education, and why the internship is so important to Abbott. She will also talk about Abbot's decision to create a Blueprint for other companies to follow. Current Abbott high school STEM interns will talk about their experiences in the program and how it has impacted their interest and ability to pursue, persist and succeed in STEM.

STEMconnector’s head of research, Abbey Myers will moderate the conversation and offer insight into the benefits of creating equitable work-based learning programs for building a diverse and robust STEM talent workforce.
