By-Laws

Wednesday, July 27, 12 p.m.

By-Laws are a necessary and required part of every nonprofit organization, but why? What’s needed? And how do you write them? Join Associated Black Charities for a presentation and discussion on the “Do’s and Don'ts” of by-laws for your nonprofit organization. Click here to register.

INDEPENDENT ARTIST AWARDS

The Independent Artist Awards (IAA) program will not be offered in the FY2023 fiscal year while MSAC staff work to envision the program for FY2024 and beyond. During FY2023, MSAC staff will seek a team of editors from the public to consider how the IAA program looks for the future. The timing of this pause will ensure we can serve all of our constituents to the best of our ability - considering new programs, funding allocations, goals, needs, and MSAC’s staff capacity. Click here for more information about the IAA program pause and revision process

While IAAs will not be awarded in 2023, there are many other MSAC opportunities that support Maryland’s independent artists, including: Creativity Grants; Professional Development; Opportunity Grants; Maryland Performing Artist Touring Roster; Teaching Artist Roster; Public Art Across Maryland; Folklife Apprenticeships; Heritage Awards and coming in early 2023 - the new Grants for Artists program!

Click here for links to MSAC programs available to independent artists

MSAC is committed to serving independent artists throughout Maryland, and it is our goal that a comprehensive editing process will ensure we are serving as many artists as possible in the most equitable way. Be on the lookout in Fall 2022 for information on Listening Sessions and a Call for Editors.

If you have questions, please contact Program Directors Emily Sollenberger at emily.sollenberger@maryland.gov or Laura Weiss at laura.weiss@maryland.gov

SPECIAL REQUEST GRANTS

Apply to be a Public Art Grant Panelist!

Accepting panelist applications for the FY23

Public Art Across Maryland Grants (PAAM) Program

PAAM funded Public Art Conservation Project for Vollis Simpson’s Whirligig

at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.

MSAC relies on a diverse array of experts from across the state of Maryland to do the important work of evaluating applications. We invite participation through program-specific public calls for panelists. We select panelists with a focus on diversity of experiences, diversity of location, and expertise in varying artistic disciplines. Panelists must be Maryland residents.

Applications to serve as PAAM panelists from fall 2022 to spring 2023 are open now. By reviewing and scoring applications, PAAM panelists bring expertise to supporting artists and organizations applying for grants for the planning and creation of new public artwork, as well as the conservation and preservation of existing works. Serving as a PAAM panelist is a great opportunity to learn about public art granting processes.

What to Expect as a Panelist:

  • Attend a virtual panelist training in late October 2022 and check-in in early April 2023.
  • Review applications on panelists’ own time during two review periods (November 2022 and April 2023).
  • Evaluate approximately 30 applications per review, which requires 8-10 hours over a one-month period.
  • Attend two virtual panel meetings to discuss and provide Round 2 scores, on December 2, 2022, and May 5, 2023. Meeting times are approximately 4 hours, with breaks.
  • Receive compensation for the training and each review.
  • Be able to access a computer with an internet connection to complete reviews and participate in virtual panel meetings.
  • You can apply for a PAAM grant and serve as a panelist. Applicants will recuse themselves from scoring their own applications.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 7-10 panelists for FY 2023.
  • Artists, arts administrators, art conservators, architects, landscape architects, and designers with a background in Visual Art and/or Public Art.
  • A wide geographic representation of the state of Maryland.

How do I apply to be a panelist?

Submit your application via MSAC’s online grants management system, SmartSimple

  • Click the Apply Now button below to log in or create a free account in SmartSimple.
  • Under Funding Opportunities, select "Public Call."
  • Under the “Narrative” tab click “Grant Program” then select “Public Art Across Maryland.”
  • Click “Save Draft” and continue with the three simple questions.
Apply Now!

Deadline Monday, August 15, 2022, 11:59 p.m.

Questions? Contact Public Art Program Director Liesel Fenner at liesel.fenner@maryland.gov for assistance.

The Maryland State Arts Council is committed to making sure all Marylanders can access its programs and services. For grant application assistance, please contact the appropriate Program Director.
