The fall is a very active time for testing and registrations at Xavier High School. With all the upcoming deadlines we thought it would be helpful for you to have all this information in one place. Please read carefully for all upcoming information.
St. Louis University (SLU)
Xavier offers dual credit courses through St. Louis University. These are advanced courses that are taught with a college curriculum. Because of this reason a cumulative Xavier GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for admission.  Registration is completed through the SLU website in order to receive dual credit and additional tuition is required ($75/credit hour. Most classes 3 credits). A list of courses can be found here.

Advanced Placement/AP Courses
Xavier offers several AP courses. These courses also follow a college curriculum. In order to receive college credit for these courses, students take the corresponding AP National Exam in May. Each exam costs $94. Colleges may accept credit for these courses depending on the student’s score. These courses are open to junior & senior students with an occasional sophomore.

Not sure the difference between AP vs SLU?  Check out this helpful slide show.

Kirkwood Concurrent Enrollment
Students taking concurrent enrollment courses at Kirkwood Community College through the Academies also receive college credit. Registration is completed in the spring of the previous school year. No additional cost is required for these courses and they are open only to juniors & seniors.

PSAT/NMSQT
Juniors have the option to take this exam in the fall.  The exam gives helpful preparation for future standardized tests and students who score well may qualify for recognition and scholarships through the National Merit organization. There is a cost to register and this is completed through 8to18 on the Xavier website.

ACT
The ACT is a national test that is used by many colleges and universities for acceptance and placement in college. The recommended best time for students to take this test is the spring of their junior year. Registration for this test is completed online at ACT.org. Xavier currently hosts 2 ACT exams per year(October/April) but there are multiple locations available in Cedar Rapids for other test dates also.

Workplace Learning Connection (WLC)
Workplace Learning Connection is a program put together through Kirkwood Community College that offers internships and job shadow opportunities for students. There are several different registration deadlines that can be found on the Xavier website along with descriptions of these programs. Xavier covers the cost for participating in these programs. Only juniors and seniors can participate in these programs. Rising sophomores will be eligible for internships the summer before their junior year.

Testing Accommodations
Testing accommodations are available for students with 504 plans or disabilities. All accommodations are set up through Mrs. Ally Callanan.

Testing waivers
To make testing available to all students including those with lower incomes, ACT offers waivers for students to test for free. If a student qualifies for free or reduced lunch, they will also qualify to take the ACT for free. Students will need to go to Student Services to obtain a waiver before registering online for the ACT. Students may receive a total of 4 waivers their junior & senior year.

Test Prep
There are many sources both online and in person for test preps that students may use. There is a list of area resources available on the Xavier website. Options vary in cost and availability. Every student should be able to find a program that works for them. Doorway to College does offer an affordable ZAPS ACT Prep Course that is hosted here at Xavier for the ACT. Registration is completed at their website.
