Dear Farm Friends,

Next in our series of crew interviews is Cory Jones. Cory, 39, grew up in Mississippi, played college football, and came to Mountain Bounty as an intern in 2012. Cory now manages our field operations, coordinating all tractor work, irrigation, and mechanical weeding.

What brought you to Mountain Bounty?

I had been working up in Tahoe doing forest thinning and working at ski resorts. I got really drawn to the idea of farming as a career path because longer term I knew I wanted to work outdoors and couldn’t see myself cramped up somewhere inside. My whole life I was an athlete and I enjoyed working hard seasonally. I traveled and worked on some farms in South America, that cemented my farming interest.

There was an awesome crew here and Pat (Patrick Bollinger, who went on to co-found Foothill Roots farm) said “You’ve driven a tractor before right? Ok here you go.” I was quickly allowed to take on a lot of responsibility. Then in 2016 I got an opportunity to move to New Jersey to start a farm for a wealthy landowner. I did that for four years, that was fun, I was able to learn a lot more about farming without too much risk on my part.

Why did you come back and what keeps you here?

I hadn’t planned to stay out east long-term and you kept telling me that the door was open to come back. It was an easy transition back. I get a lot of joy out of farming. I never get tired of it. My body gets tired, but there are always new challenges and if something doesn’t go your way you make adjustments and come back next year and try again. There’s so much going on with farming, I try to just take it once piece at time. Otherwise it can get overwhelming. One of my coaches liked to say “Control what you can control.” And there is so much variety to the work, there’s always something new.

What do you see in the future going forward with Mountain Bounty?

I hope we can continue to provide food for all these people every year. Improving our systems and getting more efficient, maybe making things a little easier. I know it will always be physical. It doesn’t bother me too much. I don’t consider myself an artist really but it is almost like art when I’m prepping fields and then we get a really beautiful crop, different colors and shades and patterns. Sometimes I like looking at it more than eating it. I feel pride and satisfaction when we succeed, creating something, doing something well.
