“Back to School season” has arrived! This year we are all navigating the excitement of new learning along with staying responsibly safe when COVID-19 remains a steadfast, serious concern. At YWCA Southeast Wisconsin, forward-focused learning and equitable future-building go hand-in-hand – virtually.
Our Economic Empowerment programs, from our Adult Ed program (offering a supportive pathway to a high school credential and digital skilling development) to our Personal Financial Management services (workshops and 1:1 services), are all available virtually. Learning how to disrupt and re-think the systems that keep racism in place can also be experienced online. Class registration for Unlearning Racism: Tools for Action© is now full, but Conversations on Race may be the perfect course to help build your eliminating racism muscle – registration is now open.
And, as September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage month, it is the perfect time to explore the many resources focused on the contributions of Hispanics to our collective culture (https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/). Begun under President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week, this month is rich in opportunities to learn how Hispanic culture shapes everyday lives –
All these learning opportunities may be virtual – but they are invaluable. Being able to reconnect and recommit to moving forward is best done together. That is how our mission to eliminate racism and empower women becomes reality – by learning and acting - together. #FueltheFuture

Conversations on Race| A virtual, six-part series designed to help you discuss race and racism in everyday conversations
To eliminate racism, in all the places where we witness its oppressive power, we need people who understand it, to address it and challenge it. This six-part, 12-hour course, will help you grow your ability to discuss race and racism in everyday conversations. Jon us and learn from our instructors, both white and of color, who will lead the program.
This course will:
- Strengthen your understanding of the power of language to shape and control racism.
- Deepen your understanding of, and normalize conversations about, race and racism.
- Help you understand how racism affects our lives, as well as the lives of our families, friends and colleagues.
- Provide space to reflect and converse in small and large groups.
Eliminating racism is an ongoing process that involves a willingness to learn about, and begin undoing, the adverse impact of racism. We will end racism when more people, especially white people, understand the importance of speaking up to address race issues when they occur.
