Dear Friends,
Hello and Happy Summer! We're well into the season and many of you are likely busy with summer activities, trips, and the usual summer fun. We hope you're staying safe and enjoying every moment. Without further ado, here is our news:
Ribbon Cutting & Mixer at CommonPoint Nonprofit Center in Livermore
Attendees of the June ribbon cutting and mixer held at CommonPoint Nonprofit Center in Livermore were treated to a wonderful evening of friendship, delicious refreshments, and best of all: learning about the Center's nonprofit members.
HERS staff members were on hand to serve up delicious food and warm welcomes for visitors. Our new location at the Center, in Suite 107, was visited by many well-wishers and we certainly enjoyed sharing our mission and making new acquaintances.
Patients wishing to be seen at our new location may visit Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays; call (510) 790-1911 for an appointment. Executive Director Tina Fernandez Steckler will work from that location on Mondays so stop by, say hello, and get a private tour so you can see what this nonprofit hub and incubator -- CommonPoint Nonprofit Center -- is all about!

HERS Team Member Spotlights
|
|
|
Keerthana Davuluri
Keerthana Davuluri has been a HERS team member since September 2021. Past healthcare work experience includes working at the postpartum ward at Jacobs Medical Center at UCSD. She is a HERS Breast Care Specialist and as such provides assessment and fitting services for post-surgical products such as breast forms and bras and compression garments to alleviate lymphedema.
Asked why she chose to join our nonprofit team, Keerthana stated that she "was drawn to HERS because of the personal and compassionate care that I saw being provided and that she "just loves meeting different kinds of people and learning about their lives."
Keerthana was born and raised in San Ramon by immigrant parents who moved from South India to the United States while in their early 20s. She graduated from UCSD with major in Human Biology and a minor in Global Health and hopes to eventually go to medical school and become a pediatrician.
Her love of community work is another reason why Keerthana chose to join HERS, a drive that developed, in part, during her high school and college years during which she focused on culture and intersectionality. Past community work has included participating in the Student Affirmative Action Committee (SAAC) and the Chancellorβs Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) at UCSD.
In her free time, Keerthana enjoys watching South Asian movies, reading, crocheting, painting, and listening to music. She also collects candles and unique earrings.
We're so fortunate to have Keerthana on our team!

Saydeh PeΓ±a
Saydeh PeΓ±a describes herself as a "proud employee" of HERS. Saydeh (pronounced "Say-dee"), joined the HERS team in January 2022 as our medical receptionist. Her position is multi-faceted: she greets patients, obtains insurance information, schedules patient appointments, and provides extensive administrative support.
Saydeh recently shared that her job at HERS has been the best work experience she's had and that she appreciates working in an environment that is "helpful, caring and supportive of (her) success." She appreciates the family-like bond of our team and feels lucky to be a part of HERS.
Saydeh was born and raised in the Bay Area and her family's roots are in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Saydeh is bilingual Spanish/English which is tremendously helpful and appreciated by many of our patients.
Saydeh will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences from Grand Canyon University in the fall and hopes to begin coursework for her M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2023. Her goal is to become a Speech Pathologist. In her free time, Saydeh states that she loves spending time at her home church, baking sweet treats, and enjoying quality time with her family and boyfriend. Saydeh is also a "very happy dog-mom" to Zoey, a beautiful German Shepherd, who helps Saydeh balance life's everyday stressors.
The next time you visit our Fremont location, be sure to say "hello" to Saydeh!

HERS is seeking a part-time volunteer licensed cosmetologist to provide wig fitting services in our Fremont location.
We are seeking a professional with experience in hair styling/wig fitting who can volunteer at least one day per week for a minimum of two hours.
HERS team members will oversee appointment scheduling, orders, and sales transactions. The volunteer will concentrate on serving our patients: putting them at ease during their visits, discussing their needs and preferences, assisting with trying on various wig styles, and advising about wig care.
This is a wonderful opportunity to help breast cancer survivors who have or will experience hair loss due to treatment. If you have a desire to give back to the community, please visit our volunteer listing on Volunteermatch.org. Questions? Call (510) 790-1911.

Employee Giving/Corporate Matching
|
|
|
Do you work for a company that encourages employee giving (aka workplace giving) and might also offer matching funds?
Many companies such as Anthem, Adobe Systems, Google, Johnson & Johnson, and Apple encourage employee philanthropy. Some even place a value on employees' volunteer activities and donate based on that valuation.
If you're wondering if workplace giving, reach out to your HR department for information. It's a win-win for employees and employers and worth exploring. And please consider making HERS the beneficiary of your giving!

ROUNDUP: Effortlessly Good
|
|
|
If you haven't yet heard of RoundUp, it's a secure fundraising app that makes donating to HERS incredibly easy.
Register one or more debit or credit cards, and every purchase you make will be rounded up the nearest dollar. The difference is then donated to HERS in one lump sum every month.

A note to business owners: please consider making HERS your beneficiary nonprofit. Register and designate HERS as the recipient of your customers' "round up" donations.

What does it mean to be a HERS Advocate? It's simple, really. Share what you know about HERS.
If you're a patient and feel comfortable doing so, share your experiences with others. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram and share our posts. Let others know about our programs and services and where we're located. and forward this email to your contacts!
These are small yet significant steps that will help connect patients with products and services that are life-changing.
Let others know, too, about our events and our support needs: funds, volunteers, and in-kind donations are always welcome.
Be a HERS Advocate and help restore HERS -- Hope, Empowerment, Renewal, and Support -- in breast cancer patients.
With gratitude,
The HERS Team
