Mortgage Assistance Program
The Mortgage Assistance Program is being administered on behalf of the City of Chicago by the National Housing Services (NHS). Given the financial hardships brought on by the shutdown of the city in March 2020,  the City of Chicago has allocated CARES Act funds to make these mortgage assistance grants available for homeowners in need.

Our agency has approximately 450 mortgage assistance grants remaining that we are trying to distribute by December 10th  to City of Chicago homeowners in need of mortgage assistance. I am hoping that your respective teams can promote the availability of these grants to your constituents in hope of reaching those who are still suffering a financial hardship due to the pandemic.

The maximum assistance for homeowners (1-4-unit properties only) is $3,300.   Following are general program requirements:
  • Must reside within the Chicago city limits
  • Provide a government issued photo ID
  • For Homeowners: Demonstrate their total household income was at 120% or below the Area Median Income (AMI) prior to March 1, 2020
  • Have experienced a change in their financial status (after March 1, 2020) due to the COVID-19 crisis
  • Mortgage must be in arrears or in a forbearance plan

Please refer potentially eligible residents to the NHS website for more information and to apply at: https://nhschicago.org/mortgageassistance.

Interested City of Chicago residents may also call NHS at 800-831-7949 or email EmergencyAssistance@nhschicago.org, including if they need
assistance applying for the program.
Chicago Works Community Challenge
Applications are now open for the Chicago Works Community Challenge, an unprecedented $10 million competition to find the best public works projects in each of Chicago’s seven planning regions.

Projects eligible for funding through the Community Challenge include new investments in public parks, schools, libraries, City-run community centers and City-owned vacant lots. Members of the public who are interested in submitting an idea can register for an informational webinar on the challenge, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9.

Applications are open to all City of Chicago residents and are due by Monday, Aug. 30. Community groups and nonprofits based in Chicago are also invited to submit proposals to the challenge.

All submissions that meet the guidelines for selection will be subject to a thorough community engagement and evaluation process that will lead to a shortlist of projects for each of the seven planning regions. Seven winning projects will be selected by the end of this year based on feasibility, design, community input, and community impact.

Additionally, all feasible submissions received through the community challenge will be considered as investment ideas for Chicago Works, Mayor Lightfoot’s five-year capital plan that will invest in communities through infrastructure. In addition to institutional investments like parks, schools and libraries, Chicago Works dedicates funding to repair and replace roads, bridges, sidewalks, ADA accessible crosswalk ramps, streetlights, traffic signals, and other traditional infrastructure projects.

New Chicago Recycling Provider
LRS, formerly known as Lakeshore Recycling Systems, has been identified as the new service provider for our residential Blue Cart recycling program as part of the ongoing efforts to improve recycling and waste diversion in Chicago. The transition will take place on Monday, June 7th in recycling areas currently serviced by Waste Management.

The only change you may see are different trucks picking up your recyclables. The week and day of collection services will remain the same and there will not be any changes in services. While DSS does not anticipate any service interruptions, any missed pick-up requests can be called in to 3-1-1 or entered into the MyChi311 App.

For more information on recycling education and outreach visit www.recyclebycity.com/chicago. Together we can improve recycling Rates!
DSS is enthusiastic about this new partnership with LRS and looking forward to improving recycling rates together.
