The Ally: Policymakers Need to 'Know What We Know' About Our Families

Now is a busy time of year policy-wise. Legislation is coming down its final stretch, and some bills are going to conference committee. We share information about bills still alive this week, so you can track bills vital to you and your family. Leaders in the House and Senate will appoint conferees soon. You can see when they make the appointments on a bill's status page.

We also share information about Dr. Hogan's most recent monitoring report in the United States v. Mississippi mental health lawsuit. It has a lot of information that we found helpful and think you will too.

We are also still making our way through the Division of Medicaid's renewal application for its Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities waiver renewal application. It is over 500 pages long, and it's taking some time. We will share more about what we learn from it, especially information relevant to families, and our possible public comments next week. Public comments are due by March 28.

We share a lot of policy information with you, not because we think families should have to become policy experts (unless you want to be). We share policy information with you because it is essential for policymakers to know what we know to make good policy. We know something nobody else knows: We know our children and what will work for them. Working with each other and with policymakers, we can—and will—make things better for our children.

Don't forget that if you, your child or anyone you know is on Medicaid, coverage is changing because the Covid emergency rules are ending. Ensure that the Division of Medicaid has your contact information to help avoid losing your coverage.

Please join us on March 16 at noon Central Time for our Virtual: Bring Your IEP and Other School Questions. Any family with any school issue is welcome. Check out our events calendar for more training and support activities.

And to any of our mental health provider friends - we would appreciate you taking a few minutes to read about and complete this survey from the Federation of Families.

NEWS

Families as Allies follows several bills related to children and families and the issues that affect them. Many bills have returned to the House in which they originated to see if that chamber agrees with any amendments (changes) that legislators made to the bills as they went through the legislative process.

EVENTS

This hour is open for any family member to drop in for all or some of the time to ask questions or get feedback about IEP issues and other school situations. We ask anyone who stops by to respect the confidentiality of the group and not share anything discussed in the group outside of the group.

Are you a parent or caregiver raising or raising a child aged 0-21 who has mental health or behavioral health challenges? Would you like to use your lived experience to help another parent who is on the same journey? Then being a parent peer supporter may be for you!

This group focuses on understanding current policy issues and also opportunities for leadership training graduates to serve on decision-making committees. Leadership training graduates are strongly encouraged to attend, but the meetings are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about policy.

This conversation is for anyone working with parents providing peer support to other parents in any system, such as Children's Services Directors, MAP Team Coordinators, Care Coordinators and Center Directors.
