Yara Slayton and Ximena Velázquez-Arenas forged a super-tight friendship as first-year law students. They bonded at orientation, shared classes and social activities, and worked so well together as the Student Association at Berkeley Law’s 1L representatives that they won the chance to be this year’s co-presidents.  

What they hadn’t done until a few days ago was meet in person: The COVID-19 pandemic forced the school to conduct their entire 1L year virtually. Slayton spent the year in Boise, with her mother and 18-year-old daughter. Velázquez-Arenas was in Mexico City with her family. 

When the moment finally happened — on a street in the real-life Berkeley, punctuated by an ebullient hug — it was epic. Read more>>
What's New?
After two years of work, Policy Advocacy Clinic alumni Marcos Mocine-McQueen ’21 (holding son) and Emma Atuire ’21 (in yellow) stand behind Gov. Jared Polis, who signs a law on July 6 abolishing juvenile fees in Colorado — one of five states ending fees this year thanks largely to the clinic’s winning strategy.
The Policy Advocacy Clinic leads the way in abolishing harmful juvenile fees nationwide, with five states eliminating fees this year alone. “Working with local partners across the country, including in the Deep South, we have shown that it is possible to completely end this regressive tax on low-income Black and Brown families,” says clinic Deputy Director Stephanie Campos-Bui ’14. Seventeen offerings are available to students this semester that count toward Berkeley Law’s race and law certificate, including six standard classes, five clinics, five seminars, and a practicum. “Student interest in this topic certainly isn’t new, just as its importance to every field of law isn’t new,” says Professor Molly Van Houweling, Berkeley Law’s associate dean of J.D. curriculum and teaching. “But our current students have been particularly engaged in discussions about how to innovate and improve our offerings.” Read more>>

The Berkeley Law Los Angeles Alumni Chapter is hosting a conversation between Professor Amanda Tyler and United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Marsha Berzon '73 about the legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The discussion will span Ginsburg's influence on the development of the law both as an advocate and judge, and allow Tyler and Berzon to share personal memories of her. Student Spotlight
Maïmouna Diarra ’23 has worked with localized grassroots and large global organizations in human rights, education, government accountability, global health, and migration. A Berkeley Law Human Rights Scholar, she won Pomona College’s Cordell Hull Prize in International Relations for her senior thesis that analyzed contemporary immigration patterns and policies between Senegal and Morocco. At Berkeley Law, Diarra is involved with the Law Students of African Descent (recruitment chair), California Law Review (associate editor), Berkeley Journal of International Law, and International Refugee Assistance Project.
