Dear Epiphanites,
Over the last year Epiphany has continued to develop a relationship with Ismaili CIVIC and the Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA. Our partnership is unfolding in some beautiful ways. In 2021, we spent the month of August learning about Islam. We collaborated on the South Fork Peachtree Creek cleanup in September, and were honored to receive an award from Rivers Alive this spring for our work. In October 2021, we visited each other's places of worship. In December, our youth collected and sorted shoes together for the St. Nicholas Shoe Drive, and are now they are getting ready to serve alongside one another and with youth from various traditions on Interfaith Atlanta’s Youth Council. What an unexpected gift this relationship has been to Epiphany—a surprising way we have encountered God's unifying Spirit.

From the beginning of our relationship with the Ismaili we have worked to identify the values we share as Christians and Muslims, knowing that our faith and our values have the potential to bring us together in friendship and mutual service to our city. One of the values we named early on was creation care and we committed to think critically about the issues of climate change (particular to our geographic location) and find ways to mutually support our constituencies to action around such issues. Over the last several months many of us have been working together to extend the circle of our friendship to form an interfaith team of partners and civic organizations who have the desire to join us in this work of learning and acting to reduce environmental harm.

On June 5, World Environmental Day (the day the UN has set aside to invite communities across the globe to consider what role they can play in addressing the climate crisis) we announce our participation in this year's "Only One Earth" initiative. How delightful for us that this coincides with Pentecost, the day we Christians celebrate and live into the movement of the Spirit who invites us into deeper connectedness with God, with the earth, and with one another.
The Only One Earth Interfaith Initiative calls for collective, transformative action in our communities to celebrate, protect, and restore our planet. Look for more details in the coming weeks about how we will continue to join with this interfaith coalition of Georgia based organizations working together to combat climate change in concrete and meaningful ways.

I hope you will join us this Pentecost Sunday to learn more about how we might knit ourselves further into this story and the other stories of Pentecost happening at Epiphany this season!

May the Spirit continue to stir us!

Nicole
Pentecost Sunday - 6/5
This Sunday, June 5 is the 50th day of Easter, the day of Pentecost. We will begin our Feast Day in the Memorial Garden and process together into the nave where we will celebrate the baptisms of Declan Bryan, Mira Gross, and Caroline Walden.

Join us in the courtyard after the service for “tongues of fire” popsicles, and don’t forget to wear red!
Summer Breakfasts Begin - 6/5
Please join us for Summer Breakfast this Sunday, June 6 before services! Vestry is hosting breakfast goodies from 9:15 - 10:00 a.m. We look forward to this time to connect and enjoy getting to know each other better.

The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World
By Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu

This book is by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who led the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission to heal the wounds from decades of apartheid, and his daughter the Rev. Mpho Tutu, who has her own story of forgiveness and received her PhD studying ways of forgiving.

As they proclaim, forgiveness is simple but not easy. They wrote this book because many of us know we need to forgive, but the process is often a mystery and not marked clearly.

There will a book group for this book this Summer led by Ellen Mintzmyer and Susan Ashmore beginning Tuesday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. and last for ten weeks (skipping July 5.) Register before June 14 to take part!
