June 2022
How does the old song go? I remember my grandmother singing it. Something about looking for the silver lining. There are times today when silver linings seem very elusive, but you can always take a respite from the headlines by opening up a book.

My suggestion for a first-class ticket to another world would be Emily St. John Mandel's Sea of TranquilityThe title alone beckons like an oasis in the desert. You could also choose to find a silver lining by getting a little closer to the heavens in Breathless, Amy McCulloch's exhilarating mystery / thriller about an ascent on one of the tallest mountains in the world--with the distinct possibility that there is a murderer on the expedition.

One of the highlights in June will be the release of Geraldine Brooks' new novel, Horse. This centuries-spanning story is based on the history of Lexington, considered to be the greatest racehorse that ever lived. The author's skill for weaving historical detail into a compelling narrative is as captivating as it was in her Pulitzer Prize-winning March and in People of the Book.

June is also Pride Month, and the Northshire has many books about the history of the gay movement as well as the gay experience in the contemporary world. Prominent among them are Emily Danforth's  Plain Bad Heroines, Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous and Douglas Stuart's Shuggie Bain, along with classics such as Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man and James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room.

When you come into the Northshire, you will see a portal surrounded by books. It is the perfect metaphor for what a book can do. Another world awaits you. It is a journey that won't be cancelled, one where you don't need to wear a mask. These days, you can hardly ask for more.

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history.

"A young man attempts to trace the origin of the painting of a magnificent horse that he retrieved from a pile of discarded items left on a city sidewalk. This remarkable book is comprised of three interrelated stories set over the span of more than a century. The author, through the painstaking research that is a hallmark of all of her work, draws the reader into a compelling narrative, integrating aspects of equine, racial, and art history. The ambitious scope of the novel seems uniquely reflective of America, where goodness and greed are always neck-and-neck in the final stretch to the finish line." - Alden Graves

Pre-order Highlight

NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2022 BY The Millions, Harper's Bazaar, New York Magazine, LitHub, AV Club, and more

In a village in a medieval fiefdom buffeted by natural disasters, a motherless shepherd boy finds himself the unlikely pivot of a power struggle that puts all manner of faith to a savage test, in a spellbinding novel that represents Ottessa Moshfegh’s most exciting leap yet

“One of America’s most celebrated authors continues her exploration of what fiction has to offer with a further digression from the standard realist purview and into fantasy. Lapvona promises to chronicle the life of Ina, a blind midwife in a medieval village. Ina’s talent doesn’t stop at childcare, and allows her a special connection with the surrounding natural world. It’s a fascinating premise, and I’m excited to see the yarn Moshfegh is able to weave.” Chicago Review of Books
