Dear William Paterson Faculty and Staff,

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. It was great to see many of you on Saturday as we welcomed back alumni and other fans for the first tailgate in nearly two years and the first home football game of the season. We also took the opportunity to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 by recognizing local and alumni, faculty, and staff veterans and first responders and thanking them for their service, during a halftime ceremony.

On Friday, I met with several Student Government Association Executive Board members and other student leaders for a constructive discussion of the University’s response to Hurricane Ida. One outcome was Provost Josh Powers’ email to faculty that same day asking that they work with students who were impacted by the storm and may have missed classes and/or assignments on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 1st and 2nd. Students who are having issues in this regard have been instructed to email Provost Powers at provost@wpunj.edu so that solutions can be found.

This week’s WPWe are Proud – As many of you have noticed while walking through campus, the former Preakness Hall now bears the name Grant Hall. The new name honors the generous philanthropic support of Professor Emerita Dr. Barbara Moll Grant ’54, who was celebrated at a ribbon cutting ceremony last week. Dr. Grant’s sister, Dr. Dorothy Grant Hennings, along with other members of the Moll and Grant families joined us, as did members of our Board of Trustees and the WP Foundation Board, students, faculty, and staff.
Dr. Grant’s transformational $5 million gift will support numerous students in multiple disciplines across the University, providing a significant boost to annual student scholarships in perpetuity. Congratulations to Vice President Pam Ferguson and her Institutional Advancement team for securing this important gift and working with Dr. Grant’s family to ensure its proper recognition, including a wonderful  ceremony.

We have had to talk often recently about challenges, but let’s be sure to always recognize and celebrate the many great things our students, faculty, and staff are accomplishing every day across the University.

Have a great week.
Sincerely,

Richard J. Helldobler, Ph.D.
