Did you know that the Apple silicon version of Adobe Premiere Pro is not the same as the Intel version? (At least for a short time...) Nope, I didn't either.

Fabian Feiner pointed out that when Premiere is running on an M-series Mac, AAF export is not available. But it is available on Intel systems. I contacted the Premiere team at Adobe and learned that this is true - for the short term. But they also gave me a workaround, in case you run up against other missing features.

In the news:

Blackmagic Design released DaVinci Resolve Studio 18. This release adds support for Blackmagic Cloud workflows as well as the DaVinci Proxy Generator app. In addition, this update adds new Resolve FX such as surface tracker to add effects to flexible moving surfaces, 3D depth map for separating backgrounds and isolating objects, and ultra beauty mode.

Blackmagic Design also released Fusion 18. This adds GPU acceleration for Fusion paint, new composition blend modes, as well as improved speed and playback performance for text, text+ and shape templates, and more.

Avid announced Media Composer 2022.7. New features include custom workspaces for multiple monitors, Avid Titler+ improvements, timeline clip notes for nested clips, improvements to the Effect editor, and interface improvements.

Sound Devices launched the A20-RX. This is a two channel wireless audio receiver with proprietary Spectraband Technology. SpectraBand gives the A20-RX receiver and A20-Mini transmitter an unprecedented tuning range: 470 MHz - 1525 MHz. The A20-RX also features high-discrimination front end filtering for better performance in noisy RF environments and Frequency AutoAssign for faster setup.

Waves announced the Cloud MX Audio Mixer. A 100% cloud-based audio mixer with superior sound quality for cloud broadcast environments. Cloud MX Audio Mixer delivers pristine audio, high-precision mix control, and creative processing capabilities with full Waves plugin integration – all in a scalable, remotely operated, broadcast-ready cloud workflow.

Blackmagic Design also launched three new ATEM live production switchers: ATEM SDI, ATEM SDI Pro ISO and ATEM SDI Extreme ISO. The new ATEM SDI family is designed to be fast to set up and easy to use. Even with their small size, ATEM SDI switchers are surprisingly powerful with standards converters on all inputs, a built in Fairlight audio mixer with six band parametric EQ, compressor and limiter on all inputs, internal DVEs, chroma keyers, professional transitions and more.

FeiyuTech launched the new SCORP-Mini, the only FeiyuTech gimbal made for use with all four popular types of cameras: mirrorless, compact, smartphones, and action cams for smooth, professional studio quality video every time. Designed for social media and short-form creators.

Frame.io has a fascinating blog on the limitations of timecode and what is needed to replace it. It is a brain-expanding read and I recommend it.

There's an old axiom for everyone who works in video, "Editing is all about work arounds." Carleton Cole presents a workaround for editing Microsoft Teams videos when the images randomly shift position.

Product Review. Control surfaces, which replace the mouse for editors, are becoming more popular and powerful. The TourBox Neo is a small control surface for just about any Windows or Mac application - with a special emphasis on media creation and editing. It is well-built with a very well-designed software interface. There's only one small problem...

Gloria Messer wrote asking: "With all the new updates, would it be possible to do an article on setting preferences for the latest version of Premiere Pro 2022?" Sure. Here it is.

Recently, I re-discovered a built-in utility for macOS that renames files. This is a very handy trick to keep in your back pocket for those times when you need it.

Just to give you a heads-up, I'm working on two product reviews which I'll publish shortly: the ATEN AI Audio Mixer MicLIVE 6-channel, and the CalDigit Thunderbolt TS4 dock. Both look very exciting - details next week.

I've been invited to speak at The Creativity Conference - from Aug. 3 - 5. The brainchild of Maxim Jago, this free online event celebrates everything creative. The speaker list is both wide-ranging and humbling. Come join the party. The conversation is amazing.

Until next Monday, stay healthy and edit well.
