DeWine Signs Bill Giving Commissioners ‘Kill Switch’ on Wind, Solar Projects
Editor's Note: Although this story does not come from the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, it does provide an update on a story they have been following.
From Ohio Capital Journal: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation Monday giving county commissioners new powers to kill wind or solar projects early in their development.
No such power exists for local officials for coal mines or oil and gas wells, which are regulated at the state level.
If commissioners opt against scuttling a project entirely, Senate Bill 52 also allows them to block wind and solar developments in all or part of unincorporated areas in the county. However, citizens would have the right to canvass signatures and put the restricted development area resolution up for a popular vote.
It also gives locals two votes on projects within their jurisdiction atop the seven preexisting votes among Power Siting Board members.

We Should Take the Threat
of Higher Inflation Seriously –
Here are 5 Ways to Do So
Please Note! This is an editorial from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It does not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and its members.
There is a big debate about whether the threat of inflation – sustained and rapid general increases in prices across a wide group of goods and services – is serious enough to deserve the attention of policymakers.
1970s and early 80s type inflation is not a forgone conclusion, but the data makes clear it is also a threat that cannot be dismissed.
Earlier today, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released data showing that inflation roared to 5.4% in May; the highest inflation since July of 2008, when it was 5.5%.
If sustained over time, inflation at the current level threatens to significantly curtail what should be a booming economy the rest of this year and beyond.

Today in History
- July 16, 1995 -
Amazon opens for business
From History: On July 16, 1995, Amazon officially opens for business as an online bookseller. Within a month, the fledgling retailer had shipped books to all 50 U.S. states and to 45 countries.
Founder Jeff Bezos’s motto was “get big fast,” and Seattle-based Amazon eventually morphed into an e-commerce colossus, selling everything from groceries to furniture to live ladybugs, and helping to revolutionize the way people shop.
Bezos earned an undergraduate degree in computer science and electrical engineering from Princeton University in 1986 then worked in the financial services industry in New York City.
In 1994, after realizing the commercial potential of the Internet and determining that books might sell well online, he moved to Washington state and founded Amazon.
He initially dubbed the business Cadabra (as in abracadabra) but after someone misheard the name as “cadaver,” Bezos decided to call his startup Amazon, after the enormous river in South America, a moniker he believed wouldn’t box him into offering just one type of product or service.

Sunday is National Ice Cream Day.
Did You Know?
Thanks to President Ronald Reagan, National Ice Cream Day is legit.
- In 1984, he signed a proclamation that declared July to be National Ice Cream Month.
- The third Sunday of that month, which this year is July 18, became officially known as National Ice Cream Day.
- The proclamation -- No. 5219, to be exact -- describes "a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90 percent of the people in the United States."
- Today, the average American consumes more than 20 pounds of ice cream each year, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.
- If you think that's a lot, multiply it by 329 million Americans.
