Cover Story: What the Memorial Day holiday weekend means to us
|
The holiday most associated with the non-astronomical start to summer, barbecues, and gatherings with family and friends (especially for those of us in the boating and hospitality industries), is one that should be celebrated for reasons other than the extra day off from work or the promise of warmer weather.
Memorial Day is a time each year for us to mourn and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our freedoms through their military service. As with other summer holidays, we at Haven Harbour Marina and Haven Harbour South pay our respects with the planting, hanging and raising of American flags – both large and small – at points all across our properties.
Originally known as Decoration Day, this solemn holiday began in an effort to honor fallen Civil War soldiers, and according to the U.S. Flag Code there is a specific way to display Old Glory on this day each year. Flyers should hoist their flags quickly up to full staff at sunrise, then lower to half-staff until noon. When the clock strikes 12:00 p.m., flags should be raised back to full staff for the remainder of the day.
In recognition of this day, we offer an exchange for the inconsiderate "Happy Memorial Day" salutation. Instead, let us gather together in celebration and remembrance of those who have fallen to defend our way of life.

On the Radar: The Haven Yacht Club's opening day, festivities for new season
|
The Haven Yacht Club will be having their opening day and flag raising next Saturday, June 4, at 4:00 p.m.
A time-honored tradition for the club, members assemble at Haven Harbour Marina's Reception Center each year, dressed in casual white, to catch-up with one another, meet new members and hear introductory remarks from the group's commodore, Robin Pomeroy, who is now in her third year in that role.
As in previous years, beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided complimentary by The Haven Yacht Club, but all THYC members are kindly asked to bring along a dish for at least 12 to share. Slipholders of Haven Harbour Marina and Haven Harbour South are welcome to join in on the festivities, as it is the club's desire to ensure that everyone knows what the organization stands for and what the social agenda will be for the coming year.
