Cleaning The Prop
1700 Tuesday, August 2

I m hoping that I will be back underway sooner than later. With that thought in mind, I tried a peek from the dock looking under Tazzarin to check her prop. The last thing I want to have happen is to have any propellor issues once the engine is back in any running. Having been sitting at the wharf for a long period, there looked to be significant growth on the propellor, some of it long! It is a folding prop and I was worried that heavy algae growth or barnacles might prevent the prop from opening smoothly and fully.

So, I checked the tide charts. There is a strong current at mid tide here; too strong to swim. Also, the water up here tends to be pretty cold! Out in the bay the sea temperature is about 50. Here in Long Cove it is warmer. However, I figured if I timed my propellor cleaning at slack low tide, there would be little current and the warmest water coming off the shallow areas of the cove.

So, a little after 1600, about an hour ago, I donned by bathing suit, snorkel and mask along with an abrasive sponge and scraper and jumped in. I think I was in the water for half an hour. My timing was good and there was very little current and the sea temperature in the cove was not too bad. The propellor is shiny and bright and I also cleaned the rudder, skeg and some of the boot top aft.

Now all I need is the engine back in the boat. I am hopeful that may happen by Friday.
