From the Heart: STHS adds equine therapy to its stable of services

Giddy-up!

When in Rome, the old adage goes, do as the Romans do.

Those words are often attributed to St. Ambrose, who coined the sentiment – if not those exact words – all the way back in the 4th century.

Earlier this week, as we gathered to cut the ribbon on our new Therapy and Wellness clinc in Folsom, right smack in the middle of St. Tammany Parish’s horse country, we couldn’t help but think of St. Ambrose and to put our own local spin on his words.

Specifically: When in Folsom, saddle up – because that’s exactly what patients at the new clinic will be able to do.

In addition to offering a full suite of physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy services for both children and adults, the new clinic has also added therapeutic horseback riding to the health system’s stable of offerings.

On Wednesday (June 29), we cut the ribbon on the new clinic, which is on the campus of New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center, a local nonprofit we’re partnering with to provide this fantastic, and very Folsom, new service.

Special delivery

St. Tammany Health System’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit got a special delivery recently – but not the kind you’re probably thinking of.

This particular bundle of joy, weighing in at a whopping 400 pounds and measuring 80.3 inches, is a brand-new, hospital-grade lab freezer, the key part of a new Northshore donor depot designed to store donations from mothers who overproduce breast milk.

The depot, located in the New Family Center on the health system's St. Tammany Parish Hospital campus in Covington, can accept milk from approved donors of the Mother’s Milk Bank of Louisiana, which provides breast milk for new mothers who are unable to produce sufficient milk supplies.

The Independence Day weekend is here, and that means fireworks, cookouts, boating excursions – and all the hazards that come with them. Recently, Joe St. Philip, the director of our Mandeville Emergency Department, visited The Lake 94.7-FM to offer July 4th safety tips.

Celebrating autism advocacy

Dr. McCall McDaniel has been awarded the St. Tammany Quality Network Medical Director’s Award for the second quarter of 2022, in recognition of her guidance in achieving Certified Autism Center certifications for targeted programs at St. Tammany Health System.
