message from the president

I hope everyone is enjoying springtime and getting ready for what I am sure will be a busy summer. I also hope you can take some time to vacation, to have down time, or to do something else you enjoy.

VAPDC certainly has had a busy late winter and spring since my last message. Several of our VAPDC committees have met during this time. We also rounded out our virtual Winter Series with a great discussion about ways that PDCs and localities can be successful in working together. And once again, a number of our PDCs had folks head to our nation’s capital for the annual NADO Washington Conference. In addition to the usual useful content at the conference, we also used our time to have some informative meetings on Capitol Hill (see more information below).

As was noted in the last newsletter, in lieu of the annual Summer Conference this year, VAPDC is organizing training opportunities for PDC staff over the course of the next fiscal year (beginning next month). These will be a mix of virtual and in-person events, beginning with a session on the Freedom of Information Act in June. We have just sent out the first round of information about this session, as well additional August and September events that are being planned.

Thank you for what you do. PDCs are all about collaboration, and we appreciate the great things that are accomplished when people, groups and organizations work together. Best wishes for a great rest of spring and summer!

Training opportunities for PDC staff will get underway next month. The first event scheduled (a virtual offering) is “FOIA for All,” a session on the Freedom of Information Act that will focus on public meetings and requests for public records. This will be followed by an early August session about the Virginia legislative process and how to become involved in it, and a September communications session. Additional information, including registration, is available here.

PDC Commissioners, Executive Directors and staff met with representatives of Virgnia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine at their Washington offices in mid-March as part of the 2024 National Association of Development Organization’s Washington Conference. We engaged in good discussion about regional projects, federal funding opportunities and other topics. Thanks again to everyone who participated.

VAPDC is grateful for the relationships it has with other organizations and state agencies. We also are thankful for the financial support we receive from these valuable partners. The Board of Directors annually approves a sponsorship opportunities form for the upcoming fiscal year. The FY24/25 form is available here for your consideration of supporting VAPDC financially in the coming year. Thank you!

about vapdc

The Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions (VAPDC) is an organization comprised of the 21 Planning District Commissions/Regional Councils in Virginia. The PDCs joined together to create the VAPDC to share best practices and further regionalism across the State. VAPDC works to bring diverse resources together at the regional level in partnership with local, state and federal entities to strengthen regions and the Commonwealth.
The purpose of the Association is to promote coordination and cooperation among the Commonwealth's Planning District Commissions/Regional Councils to heighten their effectiveness and efficiency; provide mutual assistance and the exchange of ideas; and otherwise promote understanding for how PDCs/RCs can help save their regions and the Commonwealth time and money.
