Summer Opportunities for All Ages
As the end of the school year approaches, there are many summer enrichment opportunities in District H for children, teens, and even adults.
Houston Parks' Summer Enrichment Program: 10-week day-camp program for youth ages 6-13.

Hire Houston Youth Summer Job Fair: Youth, ages 16-24, can learn about and even apply and interview for summer jobs at the event.

Lifeguarding Summer Jobs: Youth (16+) and adults with swimming skills can earn a $300 incentive to work as a lifeguard throughout the summer.

Parental Paid Leave Policy Takes Effect This Week
Last month, City Council passed a historic ordinance regarding Paid Leaves for Prenatal, Parental and Infant Wellness, which goes into effect on May 14, 2022. The ordinance provides eligible City employees with paid parental leave for prenatal, birth, and infant wellness healthcare. Save the Date: Love Your Pet Event in Second Ward
The Love Your Pet Kids' Fest, postponed in February due to weather, is coming up on Saturday, May 21st at Settegast Park in Second Ward. Not only will there be family-friendly activities, but Houston Humane Society will also be holding a Pet Pantry, offering free pet food and supplies to pet owners. View flyer here. Bicycle Scavenger Hunt in Near Northside
The Lindale Park Civic Club is hosting a bicycle scavenger hunt in the Near Northside Community to benefit HFD Stations 12 and 30. Come enjoy a ride through the neighborhood and see how many hidden spots you are able to find! There will be awards for the winners from experts to beginners. Register for the ride here.

Happy Trails and Hot Dogs at Woodland Park
Happy Trails and Hot Dogs hosted by Friends of Woodland Park will be held on Saturday, May 14th. There will be games, a hike in the woods, and entertainment by pianist Loreta Kovacic. Free hot dogs, chips, and root beer floats will be served while supplies last.

Volunteer Fair for High School Students
Leonel Castillo Community Center will be hosting a Volunteer Fair for high school students who are looking to connect with agencies and organizations that need volunteers for the summer. This event will be held outdoors and snacks will be provided as well as other fun activities.

Little Red Box Grocery Now Open in Second Ward
Little Red Box Grocery held its Grand Opening on May 10th. Little Red Box is a neighborhood market offering fresh foods, meal kits, and grocery staples, with a focus on community engagement and empowerment in the Second Ward. New Mural in Greater Heights Celebrates Houston
A new mural was recently installed near the corner of Airline and West Loop that features famous and historic aspects of our great City. The mural was created by artist Dagoe Leon. Stop by 1304 N. Loop and check it out!
Youth-Led Workshop on Mental Health
CFCI Youth Council invites youth, aged 13-18, to participate in a virtual workshop to discuss how schools can better support youth's mental health. Learn Rocket Science from Rocket Scientists
The World Youth Foundation and Lunar & Planetary Institute are hosting "It's Rocket Science!" an educational opportunity for young people to learn about new missions to space, hear from NASA rocket scientists, and build a rocket. The event can be attended in person or virtually. Learn more here.

Free Occupational Training Courses
Upgrade your skills with SER Jobs free occupational training programs. In as little as 2 weeks, participants can earn industry-recognized credentials that lead to in-demand careers in a variety of industries. Classes in banking, forklift operating, call center tech, and electrician are available online, in-person, and/or hybrid (combination online and in-person) for convenience. Update on Tree Waste Collection
The City's Solid Waste Department is working to complete 1st week tree waste routes. Residents are asked to leave their debris at the curb or visit one of our six neighborhood depositories to properly dispose of their debris. Residents who are scheduled to receive 2nd week Tree Waste collections, please place your debris at the curb.
Business Beyond Borders Summit on May 19th
The Ion, in partnership with the City's Office of Business Opportunity, will host the Business Beyond Borders Summit. The Summit aims to connect small business owners to opportunities that will help them expand their operations internationally. Learn more and register here.

Reduced Adoption Fees at BARC until May 15th
BARC Adoption Center has partnered with Bissell Pet Foundation to reduce pet adoption fees through May 15th. Adopt a pet for only $10, which is a savings of 50-87%! Adopting a pet from BARC provides a loving home for a lovable animal and frees up space within the BARC facilities to help more animals in need.
