AMPPE NAMES NEW FULL TIME BANFF LEADER TO SUPPORT A STRONG FUTURE
April 28th, 2020
Dear AMPPE Members:
AMPPE is delighted that avid outdoorswoman and government advocacy expert Debbie Harksen will join our organization next week as the Banff-based Director of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications!

She will work closely with you – our members – and veteran staff at our contracted government-relations agency in Ottawa, who are now actively engaging politicians, senior officials and Parks Canada executives to build powerful support and the required funding to restore a robust tourism sector to the Mountain National Parks.

“Debbie has dynamic skills and a wealth of experience that will bolster AMPPE and serve our members exceptionally well as we recover from this dark period for tourism,” says Stuart Back, who co-chairs AMPPE with Yannis Karlos. “As never before, delivering exceptional visitor experiences will be of the upmost importance to attract people back to our parks, businesses and communities.”

With a strong focus on public relations, marketing, and public engagement, Debbie brings to the job over 11 years of advocacy and governmental experience. Entrepreneurial at heart, she previously started and ran her own business for over a decade. Her most recent position was Team Lead, Stakeholder and Community Relations - Alberta Environment and Parks. She has also been working in the Climate Change Division, garnering superb insight into Provincial and Federal policy implementation.

Debbie is a natural fit for AMPPE. She hikes, bikes, skis, and paddles and has been competing in expedition and adventure racing internationally for a number of years.

“We have a unique opportunity to raise awareness and further our collective efforts as the voice of local business and park enthusiasts,” adds Yannis.  “The federal and provincial governments are exploring how to restart the economy and how to ease restrictions. Our active, and timely input will be critical.”

One of the first items on Debbie’s to-do list will be to garner input from members and stakeholders on your ideas and concerns. The input will inform communications and guide post-pandemic planning.

Initially we will be using video meetings to introduce Debbie to our Members and Stakeholders. In person meetings will happen as soon as appropriate. Feel free to drop her a line at [email protected] to introduce yourself and welcome her to our team.
