Flag Day Parade

The 23rd Annual Flag Day Parade took place on June 11, and it appeared that there was a record crowd watching. The parade included Miss Washington State, Miss Teen Washington, marching bands, drill teams, floats and car clubs. More than a thousand people participated in the parade with marching bands coming from as far away as Pierce and King Counties.

The parade is put on by the Ocean Shores North Beach Elks Lodge with financial support from the Quinault Beach Resort & Casino as the sponsor. Ocean Shores Mayor Jon Martin thanked all of the Elks volunteers who put this together and offered a special shout out to Mark and Jenae Garber, who designed the winning parade float.
Assistant Fire Chief Brian Ritter

The City of Ocean Shores was very excited to promote an internal candidate as our new Assistant Fire Chief. After reviewing multiple applications, Brian Ritter was the unanimous choice of our selection committee. Brian Ritter started his fire service career as a Volunteer in Edmonds Washington in 1999 and then was hired as a part time "Resident Firefighter" with Snohomish County Fire District 7. After attending Paramedic School, he was hired in 2004 with the Ocean Shores Fire Department as a Firefighter Paramedic.
Brian was promoted to Lieutenant in 2008 and in 2011 was promoted to Captain. Brian has held most positions within the Fire Department including Interim Assistant Fire Chief in 2017. In addition, Brian was selected by his peers as Firefighter of the Year in 2011 and 2017. In the past 5 years Brian has served as the Department's Fire Training Officer. The Fire Training model that Brian developed with his coworkers was successful in getting our Firefighters certified to a higher level. Brian has been with the Ocean Shores Fire Department since 2004.

At Brian’s swearing-in ceremony, we all came away deeply impressed with the support Brian received from the community, Council, City Administration and from the Ocean Shores Police Department. As Brian informed us, “It is an honor to be a part of the past, present and future of this Fire Department and the City of Ocean Shores. I look forward to my new leadership role, and I am excited to see how we can develop as a Fire Department while serving the needs of our community by fulfilling our motto 'Pride, Commitment and Service.'”
The Beautification of Ocean Shores Continues

Thanks to Ron Lambert of Bennett’s Fish Shack and the City's Public Works Department, new flower baskets are hanging on Point Brown. Ron went above and beyond in purchasing the baskets and the brackets for safe installation.

The City administration is equally grateful for the community efforts led by Jim Hummer and the Ocean Shores Beautification Committee. Next week the group will be at the Shilo Garden Park to plant new trees and flowers and will be decorating the entrance to the City for the 4th of July and will be adding 1,600 plants and trees including Japanese Maples at the City Gates.
4th of July at Ocean Shores

The 4th of July weekend is rapidly approaching and although the holiday falls on a Monday this year we are still anticipating significant crowds over the weekend. A few rules still apply as always:

  • Fireworks hours are July 2 and July 3 noon to 11:00 pm and July 4th noon to midnight.
  • In the City of Ocean Shores, fireworks may only be discharged on the beach between Damon Road and Marine View Drive. Fireworks cannot be discharged in the City.
  • Respect burn bans. If no ban is in place, beach fires must be 100 feet from the dunes and vegetation. Please completely extinguish your fire with water.
  • No camping is allowed on the beach.
  • Pick up any garbage and waste from fireworks.
  • Use only legal fireworks purchased licensed stands.
  • There are legal consequences for injuries or damage caused by irresponsible use of fireworks or illegal explosive devices.
  • Drive safely on the beach. Remember it is a state highway with a maximum speed of 25 MPH.
  • Always be aware of tides.
