Collection for The Doorways

We have another opportunity to collect

non-perishable food for The Doorways.

The Doorways provides a home away from home for the families with a loved one at participating Richmond-area hospital partners. Our collection of canned and packaged goods will help supply the residents with the items they need to prepare their own meals. To find out more about The Doorways, please visit their website.

We will have a basket next to the parlor for your contributions from Sunday, March 12 through Sunday, March 26. Please help us provide food for those families during their time of need. Thanks, from the Serving Team.

We hope you will join us!

Volunteers Needed for

Live Streaming Team!

We are so grateful for our small but faithful group of volunteers who have kept our services online through Covid and beyond. We need 3-4 more volunteers to keep this ministry going. We have 30-40 faithful worshipers online each week and this ministry is vital in keeping folks connected to our ministry. We are in special need of volunteers for Easter Sunday! There is time to learn by observation over the next few weeks for a few willing people.

The schedule for serving each Sunday is flexible. It's our hope to continue to have enough volunteers for people to serve every 4-5 weeks.

Please contact the pastor at srpastor@centumc.org if you'd be willing to serve.

The Centenary family truly was a family to me during Willie's illness and after his death. The love and concern that poured down on Grady and me gave us comfort, and we felt your prayers. We will never forget your many kindnesses during one of the most stressful moments of our lives. Thank you from the entire Ray family for all you did. We wish many blessings on you all.  ~ Suzanne Ray

Altar Flowers to Honor Beth Smethie

Centenary history - the more you know.

Beth Smethie was a Godly woman. After losing her only child her life's mission was to serve young people. In May of 19961 she invited Centenary’s young women to her home and said, “You ladies need to be in a circle of the Women’s Society of Christian Service." There are still 6 members of Centenary who were present that night. The WSCS later became the United Methodist Women(UMW) when the Methodist Church became the United Methodist Church. Of course we loved and respected her so much we readily agreed. We were circle 10. Yes, there were 10 circles (with about 12 members each) at Centenary. The purpose is read at each meeting.

“To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.

To develop a creative supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.”

Over the years as church membership dwindled we became the “Smethie” circle of the UMW, welcoming all women interested in fellowship and missions. All the pledged money goes directly to global ministries. Local missions are supported by our yearly Pecan sale. We welcome all women of faith. -- as related by Leah Hundley

James B. Douglas Portrait

James Douglas Portrait

One of our church’s treasures is a portrait by David Silvette of Reverend James Baxter Douglas, given to the church by Dr. and Mrs. Julian C. Metts. Members of Centenary of a certain age (like me) remember Reverend Douglas and his wife, Ann Jackson Moore Douglas, with great fondness as beloved and respected figures at Centenary in the time he served the church as minister of visitation from 1963 to 1976 and well beyond. From the United Methodist Virginia Conference Archives:

James Baxter Douglas (1891-1983)

Seeing “Brother Jimmy’s” tall, trim frame walking the streets of Richmond with fast step and dapper appearance became a familiar sight. He was an inveterate visitor.

He loved people and they responded in loving him in a large way. No task was too small,

no responsibility too great for him to tackle it with glee. He was one of God’s great doers, serving without fanfare, but serving all

who came to him both young and old, wealthy and poor. In this distinguished servant of the Lord Christ all found

a friend and helper.

David Silvette (1909-1992) was a prominent portrait artist who lived on Richmond's North Side. His 1976 portrait of Thomas Jefferson hangs in the main house at Tuckahoe. In 1935, he painted the only known life-sitting of F. Scott Fitzgerald, which hangs in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Other portraits by Mr. Silvette are found in private homes, the US Treasury, and Virginia's State Capitol.

The Trustees and leaders of the Administrative Council recently arranged to move the portrait to a more prominent location near the entrance to the Chapel. Stop by and enjoy this gift that keeps alive the memory of this member of our church family.

Mission

Our mission is to change the world through love.

To acknowledge God’s love is, for each of us, a life-changing event.

As followers of Jesus, we share God’s love for all people, and work together to make our world a better place, one life at a time.
