Applications Open for the
Catalyst Summer Internship
|
|
Applications for the Catalyst Internship are now open! Internship provides an opportunity to be part of an innovative project team to learn about early translational research and the process of translating academic discoveries into products for patient benefit. The primary focus for Catalyst Interns is to draft Target Product Profiles (TPPs) for the 2024 Catalyst Awardees. While creating the TPPs, interns will learn about important aspects of translating an idea into a product. One way in which interns learn about translation is through the Catalyst Summer Internship Workshop Series (register here). The approximate commitment is 30-40 total hours over 10 weeks in Summer 2024 and the application deadline is Friday, May 31, 2024.

Join the UCSF Catalyst LaunchPad for a Fireside Chat with Stephanie Wisner, CEO & Co-Founder of biotech startup Centivax and author of the new book “Building Backwards to Biotech: The Power of Entrepreneurship to Drive Cutting Edge Science to Market” on Thursday, June 6 at 4 PM (PT).
In 2022, Stephanie was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Healthcare and her company, Centivax, demonstrates the benefits of building backwards. The Centivax team built the company around a goal to make vaccines more effective against viral mutations, including those for influenza and COVID-19, and has raised $10 million in a Series A funding round for its universal vaccine technology.

The UCSF - UC Berkeley Master of Translational Medicine (MTM) Program is hosting their Final Symposium on Friday, June 7 at Byers Auditorium in Genentech Hall on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. This event will showcase the MTM Class of 2024 and their capstone projects to move innovative medical devices and therapies toward clinical use and commercialization. All are invited to attend this event featuring recent advancements in healthcare technology solutions, including several Catalyst Award projects.

Catalyst Awardee Ida Sim in the News
|
|
Catalyst Awardee Ida Sim MD, PhD, UCSF’s chief research informatics officer, was recognized as one of 50 influential people on STAT News’ 2024 STATUS List, which highlights influential people shaping the future of health and life sciences. The recognition described Prof. Sim as a “major force behind the advancement of digital medicine” and cited her largely “behind-the-scenes work on gnarly technical problems” including co-founding Open MHealth and co-developing the open-source software suite Common Health. Prof Sim's work as co-director of the new UCSF UC Berkeley Joint Program in Computational Precision Health and the newly launched Agile Metabolic Health effort was also cited.

Delve Bio Shows Utility of mNGS in Diagnosing Neurological Infections
|
Delve Bio, a pioneer in metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for infectious diseases, in collaboration with UCSF announced data on the use of mNGS for the diagnosis of infectious causes of meningitis and/or encephalitis in real-world clinical settings. The study was presented by Catalyst Awardee and Delve Bio co-founder Charles Chiu, MD. PhD.

Global Life Sciences / Healthcare Entrepreneurship Course
|
|
The Innovation Ventures' global online entrepreneurship course, Global Life Sciences/Healthcare Entrepreneurship Course: Virtual Master Class Direct from Silicon Valley, has brought best practices from Silicon Valley to almost 40 countries worldwide. The 10 week, part time professional online course teaches essential business basics for startups and is offered once per year in the fall.
The course covers the essence of a business plan: assessing if the science can be the basis for a company, how to identify a business model, building the startup team, intellectual property, FDA, investment criteria and much more. Diverse professionals have joined, including scientists, clinicians, researchers, academics, founders, potential entrepreneurs, management teams, ecosystem managers, tech transfer, corporate executives, investors, policymakers, and consultants.

Catalyst Awardee Tommaso Di Ianni Selected as the 2024-2025 PARC Fellow
|
|
The UCSF Pain and Addition Research Center (PARC) announced that current Catalyst Awardee Tommaso Di Ianni, PhD, has been selected as the PARC Fellow of 2024-2025. Asst. Prof. Di Ianni's project is titled "Minimally Invasive Closed-loop Neuromodulation via Combined Focused Ultrasound and Functional Ultrasound Imaging."
The PARC Fellowship, supported by an anonymous donor, provides an award to UCSF faculty conducting innovative pre-clinical and clinical research in pain, addiction, and the intersection thereof. Recipients of the award receive $100,000, which can be used flexibly to advance the fellow’s research.

The business development professional’s purpose is to optimize optionality and long-term value at each stage of a company’s life. In this workshop, attendees will hear from a deal-making team at Johnson & Johnson Innovation and learn fundamental business development skills to successfully evaluate and manage strategic alliances and other potential growth opportunities.

The Catalyst LaunchPad hosted a virtual Fireside Chat with MedTech Entrepreneur Patrick Beattie. Patrick has spent over 15 years developing new and innovative technologies to create change in biotechnology, pharmaceutical research & development, and healthcare delivery.
