Connecticut business and government leaders project optimism at summit meeting
Connecticut businesses are ready to make a comeback following disruptions caused by the pandemic, according to the state’s business and government leaders who met this week at the Connecticut Economic Development Summit.

David Lehman, the state’s economic czar, said Connecticut has already started to attract new businesses and residents.

Lehman said the flexibility and innovation of small businesses kept Connecticut’s economy resilient during the pandemic. He credited alcohol producers that made hand sanitizers and uniform manufacturers that switched to making PPE for hospitals. Read More
Chamber’s ‘Economic Outlook’ centers on workplace issues, tax trends
Retiring early to Maine was a dream come true for one People’s United Bank employee, but it was a bit of a nightmare for his boss.

John Traynor, executive vice president and chief investment officer at People’s, recently lost a key portfolio manager, who retired at age 62 to eat lobster up north. The employee’s decision reflects several trends that threaten New Haven-area companies in a market where highly skilled workers are at a premium.

Traynor highlighted the challenges of a shifting workforce at Thursday’s Regional Economic Outlook event hosted by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce at the New Haven Lawn Club. Read More
2021 CT Tax Amnesty Program
The 2021 Tax Amnesty Program provides individuals and businesses a limited opportunity to pay back taxes at a reduced interest rate and no penalties.

Now through January 31, 2022, the program provides a 75% reduction in interest and waives penalties and the possibility of criminal prosecution to those who have not filed, have under reported, or have existing liabilities related to taxes owed to the State for any tax period ending on or before December 31, 2020.

Relics of CT history will soon see a new twist: ‘County Equivalents’
As state officials read the weekly COVID-19 transmission reports by county — for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Nov. 16 that Windham, Litchfield and New London counties were recording “high” levels of virus transmission — some state residents might pause to ask: Connecticut has counties?

Well, sort of, not really — but we are likely to get “county equivalents.”

Unfortunately, county data is almost useless in Connecticut, because the groups of towns in the eight historic counties are not the same as the groups of towns in the regional entities we have today — nine planning regions represented by “councils of governments,” or COGs. Read More
