News from the Southeastern Delegation to the AMA
Dear Colleagues

Well, here we are again at the beginning of a New Year.

We continue our historical summary of past AMA Presidents elected from current SED states; both the pictures and vignettes are a fascinating look both into our AMA Past and into the changes in the faces of American medicine. We all appreciate our current richness of diversity in AMA membership and leadership.

We continue our Business Corner articles with a key article by Alain Chaoui, MD, et al on Physician Burnout that has sparked significant public press response in Massachusetts and elsewhere. Dr Chaoui is President of the Massachusetts Medical Society and a leader at AMA.

Finally, the SED Board of Directors has updated our Operations Manual and Historical Summary; please go to our public SED Web Page, http://www.ama-sedelegation.org/, to explore these updated documents.

We want to start a NEW SED Newsletter column; something from you all, our members and readers, of general interest, an essay or a poem on any topic of your choosing, or a poignant cartoon or drawing. Send your work to our Executive Director, Karen Foy at karen.foy@yahoo.com for review and edits; we might not publish your work, but who knows?  Failing any submissions by our April Newsletter deadline of March 31, we might print something from one of the SED leadership. Stay tuned.

Have a great 2019,

Bill Clark, MD (GA), Chair, SE Delegation to AMA
Claudette Dalton, MD (VA), Chair-elect, SE Delegation to AMA
Greg Cooper, MD (KY), Immediate Past Chair, SE Delegation to AMA

A CRISIS IN HEALTH CARE:
A CALL TO ACTION ON
PHYSICIAN BURNOUT

Physician burnout — a condition in which physicians lose satisfaction and a sense of efficacy in their work — has become widespread in our profession, driven by rapid changes in health care and our professional environment. As physicians, we have
seen how frustrating computer interfaces have crowded out engagement with patients, undermining patient encounters for both physicians and patients. We felt how long work days become still onger as physicians struggle to keep up with a soaring burden of administrative tasks. We know how the very goals of patient care can be distorted by the demands of documentation or quality measures.
