Color Our World 2024

Come join us in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities at TASC's Color Our World 5K! Lace up your sneakers and get ready for an unforgettable experience.

Choose between our 5K course, which is timed with a bib, or our 1K route, perfect for a leisurely walk, jog, or stroll. Along both paths, you'll encounter vibrant color stations where you'll be doused with colored cornstarch, turning your shirt into a festive keepsake of the day. Don't worry if you prefer to stay color-free – we have an option for you too.

No matter your ability, all are welcome to participate. As you make your way through the course, enjoy the sounds of live musical performers to keep you entertained and motivated. And when you cross the finish line, the fun doesn't stop there.

Join us for a lively Closing Ceremony featuring food trucks, a bounce house, interactive animal exhibits, arts & crafts, and much more! This is an event you won't want to miss, so mark your calendars and get ready for a day of fun and community support. Please click the button below or visit https://bit.ly/COW5K24.

Could you share a bit about your role at TASC and what a typical day looks like for you?

As a DSP (Direct Service Professional), my primary role involves providing support to my client, with whom I've been working for over a year now. A typical day varies depending on our scheduled outing, often influenced by factors like weather or the client's preferences. We usually start our day around 9 a.m., gathering necessary information as a team before heading out to ensure everything runs smoothly.

In the morning, after inspecting our van, we pick up our client, always aiming to start the day on a positive note by welcoming them with motivating music, a friendly gesture like a high-five or a hug, and their favorite snacks and tunes. Our destination could range from a museum visit to a leisurely stroll in the park or a trip to the movie theater. Despite the possibility of long drives, we make them enjoyable with sing-along sessions. Upon arrival, we prioritize the client's needs, offering restroom breaks, snacks, or a quick stretch before engaging in the day's activities, providing constant support and encouragement throughout.

What initially drew you to work with TASC, and what motivates you to continue working here? My initial attraction to TASC stemmed from its proximity to my home. However, what truly resonated with me is my decade-long experience in this field, coupled with a passion for learning and embracing new challenges. TASC has been instrumental in providing opportunities for personal and professional growth, such as offering RBT courses to enhance our understanding of clients and facilitate their independence within the community.

I'm continually motivated by TASC's commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of individuals with disabilities. By equipping us with the tools and knowledge to empower our clients, TASC fosters an environment where everyone, regardless of ability, is afforded dignity, respect, and opportunities for personal growth.

How do you feel TASC makes a difference in the lives of people with disabilities, and what impact do you hope to have through your work?

TASC plays a pivotal role in transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities by promoting independence, fostering inclusivity, and nurturing personal development. Through initiatives like teaching independent living skills and instilling a sense of dignity and respect, TASC empowers its clients to thrive in society.

Personally, I aspire to contribute to this transformative journey by ensuring that every individual I work with experiences the same opportunities and freedoms as anyone else. By facilitating meaningful community engagement, promoting independence, and championing their goals and aspirations, I hope to make a lasting difference in their lives.

Can you tell us about a particularly memorable experience or success story from your time at TASC?

Reflecting on my time at TASC, one of the most impactful aspects has been the dedication and support of our BCBA team. Their commitment to fostering open communication and empowering staff members to succeed ultimately benefits our clients, ensuring they receive the best possible care and support.

Witnessing individuals with disabilities overcome challenges and achieve their goals has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing them conquer their fears, navigate obstacles, and embrace opportunities that once seemed out of reach is a testament to the transformative power of TASC's programs and the unwavering determination of our clients.

Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, TASC celebrates the valuable contributions and significant presence of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Amidst this celebration, it's essential to acknowledge the existing societal barriers affecting people with disabilities within the AANHPI community.

Effecting meaningful change and fostering inclusivity necessitates a cultural, practical, and economic transformation. It requires the courage and commitment of individuals, the implementation of policies to address disparities, and a culture that embraces diverse narratives reflecting the complete Asian American experience, including the intersectionality of the disability community.

This May, we are proud to spotlight some of the remarkable individuals within the this community who have not only shaped history but have also triumphed over adversity with their disabilities. As we commemorate AANHPI Heritage Month, let us pay homage to some of the influential figures who have left an indelible mark on history:

Helen Hoang - Vietnamese American author Helen Hoang is known for her bestselling novels that bring fresh perspectives to the romance genre. Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as an adult, Hoang has been a vocal advocate for neurodiversity and has used her platform to raise awareness about autism. Her debut novel, "The Kiss Quotient," features an autistic protagonist and has received critical acclaim for its authentic representation.

Tammy Duckworth - As a U.S. Senator from Illinois, Tammy Duckworth is a trailblazer in American politics. Born to a Thai mother and American father, Duckworth lost both of her legs and partial use of her right arm while serving in the Iraq War. Her resilience and dedication have made her a powerful advocate for veterans and people with disabilities, and she continues to break barriers as one of the few Asian American women in the Senate.

Haruki Murakami - Renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami is celebrated worldwide for his surreal and introspective literary works. Despite facing challenges with social anxiety disorder, Murakami's perseverance and passion for storytelling have earned him accolades such as the Franz Kafka Prize and the Jerusalem Prize.

Keala Settle - Best known for her powerful performance of "This Is Me" from the film "The Greatest Showman," Hawaiian-born Keala Settle has faced significant health challenges, including a rare cerebrovascular condition. Despite these obstacles, Settle's talent and determination have made her a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. She uses her platform to raise awareness about her condition and to support others facing similar challenges.
