~ A Message from Rev. Lori ~

Greetings!

This week has been a difficult one on many, many fronts. We have watched as suicide bombs took lives, both civilian and military, in Afghanistan. We have heard the stories of desperate people there struggle to get out of harm's way only to find it nearly impossible to do so. We have watched COVID come roaring back in many parts of the United States to the horror of hospital workers and families grieving fresh losses of life. And as I write, there is a hurricane bearing down on Louisiana...again. It is likely to arrive just as we see the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina tomorrow.

I struggle in weeks like this one with wondering how I can help - what I can do to be useful in the face of such national and international need. For me, one answer is prayer. As simplistic as it may sound, even just holding the faces or the names of those who have needs in my mind allows me to move beyond myself for a few minutes and to recognize not only another's situation, but also the relative safety and comfort of my own. I'm less likely to take things for granted. I'm more sure I need to find any small way to assist -whether that is sending funds for Afghan families (see Getting Involved below) or donating blood at the Red Cross.

The reality is that any good and love we bring to those around us is part of the healing we all need in weeks like this, so there is nothing small about just checking in on someone you know is struggling with loneliness. There is something truly revolutionary in smiling at people who are not being nice to you as long as you really mean it, and there is world changing to be had in noticing someone needs a door held open. Do respond to the global needs as you see ways you can! And don't be afraid to also just love the person next to you with all your heart. That, too, ensures all will be well. And to that end, I want to mention a more local need. The Salamone family is helping friends seek childcare for a one-year-old boy who needs care in his home in West Irondequoit two days a week. If you know of anyone who might be perfect for this need, please have them contact Mike Salamone at 315-409-5244. And as always, thank you for the things you do to make the Mary Magdalene Church community a loving and inclusive place for ALL.

With love,
Rev. Lori

GETTING INVOLVED!

Family Promise - Afghan Families Need Your Help! An appeal from Lauren Urzetta Frey

Catholic Family Center and our partners are working hard to welcome those Afghan translators and interpreters who worked directly with the U.S. Armed Forces or at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, as part of the US State Department Special Immigration Visa (SIV) program. Rochester is one of 25 cities in the U.S. to welcome families in this situation, and many of them are grateful to now call Rochester their new home.

With this said, we are asking for your help as we welcome these families that are experiencing tragedy. We are in desperate need of essentials to help these families get situated.

If you would like to make a monetary donation, please visit https://www.cfcrochester.org/donate/. There is an option to choose a program “I’m most interested in:”, where you will find an option for "Refugee Resettlement & Immigration Programs". You can also purchase essential items off of our Amazon wish list here: https://www.amazon.com/registries/custom/11W1SJ0TKGI3Q/guest-view
