Dear Neighbour,

Welcome to the June edition of your South Balham Newsletter, from Tom Mytton and Nabi Toktas, your local champions.

Culverden Road: New Road Signs Installed

Having spoken to a number of residents who have raised this with me over the past few months, I am delighted we have secured a resolution by the Council. They have accepted our request to install road safety signs in a speeding and accident hotspot.

Balham in Bloom 2022

For a second year, we attended the Balham in Bloom 2022 awards. There were even more brilliant entries this year. A huge congratulations to both the winners and runners-up. This is an annual community-led campaign by the fantastic Beautify Balham team. Find out more here.

Wandsworth Labour publicly support RMT Railway strikes chaos

The impact of the RMT strikes on local residents in Wandsworth have been felt across the borough but especially here in Tooting Bec and Balham. We wrote to the Cabinet Member for Transport and South Balham Labour Councillor, Clare Fraser, to request her to support the hardworking people of Wandsworth by condemning this strike action. We are yet to receive a response and have seen Wandsworth Labour publicly backing these strikes. It was equally disappointing to see the new Labour Leader of Wandsworth Borough Council, Cllr. Simon Hogg personally supporting the GMB union strikes. The Council’s Labour Leadership needs to take a fair and dispassionate view of this dispute, otherwise residents lose out.

HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Earlier in the month it was great to see so many across Tooting Bec, South Balham and the Borough more widely, celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We managed to get out and see some of the fantastic street parties that residents were hosting. Particularly in light of the last two years everyone was enjoying time together. We were equally delighted to see our local community has received a commemorative paving stone celebrating the jubilee, which can be found outside of Sainsbury’s on Bedford Hill.

Veronica Road pavement work

We are delighted to see that, after a very short period of time, the repaving on Veronica Road is now complete. The path is now safer and easier to use for pedestrians. This is part of the previous Conservative administration’s investment in our local area.
