NEW  PATSY MINK AND HISTORIC TITLE IX

As most of you know, Maui’s own Congresswoman Patsy Mink was honored throughout Hawai‘i and in the nation’s capital last Thursday, June 23rd on the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the civil rights law she championed that prohibits discrimination based on sex at educational institutions that receive federal financial assistance. During the Washington, D.C. commemoration, Congresswoman Mink’s wonderful portrait was unveiled. You can see it and read more about the ceremony at the Capitol here.

 NEW  KA‘ANA MANA‘O

Here’s my latest column in The Maui News.

 NEW  UHMC SUPPORTS BOY SCOUTS

We are proud to be the new charter organization for Boy Scouts of America Troop 1. The Troop has a long history on Maui beginning in 1920 in Pā‘ia.

We have a connection to this troop, too. Chris Chong of our Operations and Maintenance department is an Assistant Scoutmaster and has a son in Troop 1.  And Elijah Evangelista – Teri Evangelista’s son – obtained his Eagle Scout rank by completing his Eagle Project at our college. He removed all the glass chips in the large parking lot planter near the Laulima building, reinstalled the weed cloth, and filled the parking planter with crushed gravel. That parking planter looks a lot better now. Elijah graduated with his Associates degree from UHMC this Spring.

Our primary role as the chartering organization will be to support the adult leaders of the troop who manage the scouts and serve them with a wide range of personal development support. We will provide the Troop with a meeting space and storage space for equipment and supplies. The scouts will assist the college with projects such as event set up and campus cleanup as well as other services to support our college programs throughout the year.

David Tamanaha will be the liaison between the Troop and UHMC.

A VERY SPECIAL UPWARD BOUND ADVENTURE!

This year, Upward Bound Maui combined programs with Upward Bound Alaska to provide students with a unique problem-based learning experience. All the students spent three weeks in Alaska and are now completing their summer experience with two weeks here on Maui. You can see some great photos, visit the Upward Bound One Ocean Summer Academy website, and register here for the final symposium presentation on Thursday, June 30th, and attend in person or via Zoom. For in-person guests, there will be a lū‘au in the Pā‘ina Building to celebrate the students’ hard work!

 IMPORTANT UPDATE

COVID INFORMATION FOR SUMMER ON CAMPUS

Face masks are required indoors on our campus except when working alone or separated from others by at least six feet. Campus officials may further specify areas where face masks are required to enhance safety.

The indoor face mask requirement will remain in place and be re-evaluated when the level of COVID-19 transmission in the State decreases. All members of the UH community should continue to monitor your hawaii.edu email and UHNews.org for updates.

For those returning to campus after quarantine or isolation, face masks must be worn around others in all settings – including outdoors – for the remainder of the 10-day period.

If you know you have been exposed to COVID-19 or you begin to experience symptoms, please get tested before returning to campus or any UHMC facility, no matter your vaccination status.

If returning from personal or university-approved, out-of-state travel, it is strongly recommended that you take a COVID test within two days of return to the State and BEFORE returning to a UHMC campus or facility. It is also strongly recommended that you take a follow up test on day five after your return.

Hawaiʻi COVID-19 Testing Sites (includes free options)

Free at-home COVID-19 tests

You can get a COVID test at the Campus Health Center. You must schedule an appointment by calling at 984-3493. If you have medical insurance, please bring your medical card and ID when you come for testing. But you do not need medical insurance to get a test. The testing is free.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to be up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations – that includes receiving the 1st booster shot, and 2nd booster shot, if eligible. CDC tool to determine when or if you can get one or more COVID-19 boosters Full or Up-to-date vaccination is required for employees and students in specific UH programs or courses (medical, nursing, social work, dental hygiene, etc.) where they are embedded within partner institutions that require vaccination.

If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home and isolate for at least 5 days (until you are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and your symptoms are improving).

We strongly recommend that you stay home if you feel ill, whether with COVID-19 or not, to recover and prevent community spread.
