(New Orleans – May 18, 2021) — NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) is saddened by the passing of former U.S. Representative and Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer. Revered by many, Charles E. “Buddy” Roemer lived a life with purpose, representing the state he so dearly loved. For more than a decade, he fought to improve the lives of all those he represented throughout our great state of Louisiana both as a Congressman and Governor.
“A brilliant, determined, and hardworking leader, Governor Roemer will be greatly missed by all those he touched through his life of public service, and his legacy will live on for generations to come,” said Orleans Parish School Board president Ethan Ashley.
As Governor, Mr. Roemer will be remembered for his work to lift up so many teachers and the work they did and do every day. In the late 1980s, he successfully fought to raise teacher pay. He recognized the higher salaries could improve teacher retention, increase gains in student performance, and create more interest among college students to pursue education degrees.
Governor Roemer was also a champion of reform. He appointed Louisiana's first inspector general, and he fought to toughen the state's campaign finance laws. He eliminated deficits in the state's budget, and he prioritized environmental protections across Louisiana.
“Governor Roemer was a visionary who wanted to make Louisiana better,” said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace”.
