Hot Financial Summer

Michigan Jump$tart Coalition wanted to thank each of you for your commitment teaching financial education whether it was in person or virtually. With summer officially started, we hope that all of you are taking time to reflect on the past school year and taking time for a mental break before the fall school year starts.

We wanted to keep the content light this month so you can enjoy the summer. You will find some free activities and resources that can help you in and out of the classroom, personally and for your students.

Big News - FREE Conference Opportunity

Return, Reset, and Recommit to Financial Education.

The Jump$tart National Educator Conference will be held November 6-8, 2021 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. This is an all-scholarship event for teachers and the deadline to apply is August 20, 2021. You can learn more here.

Michigan Jump$tart has the ability to send TWO TEACHERS from the State to the conference. Please email us if you would be interested in attending the national conference. Send us a message at info.mijumpstart@gmail.com with why you would benefit from attending the conference.

Professional Development Opportunities

We are building a calendar of professional development opportunities and other events. Please let us know if you have information to add. Below you will find several opportunities throughout the month of July.

During the summer, Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) will have several opportunities to register for 3-week, 9 hour courses to become certified in specific personal finance topics. You can learn more here about the dates for each of the cohorts and topics.

Resources & Activities

Finding activities that are fun and engaging can be tough. Below you will find a list of resources and upcoming activities that could help you with your lesson plans:

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). CFPB has created resources by grade level that can help both parents and teachers with the building blocks of learning about money. You can find more free resources by grade level here.

Council of Economic Education: Council of Economic Education has put together free summer activities that are focused for both teachers and students.

For Teachers: During the month of July, they are offering a Summer Institute. You can receive up to 18 hours of professional development by attending all three sessions. You can learn more about the Personal Finance Essentials here on July 12 & 13.

For Students: Have created summer sessions "Invest in Girls" that are focused for high school girls that teach them how to be the CFO of their own lives. Topics include creating a budget, using credit cards, understanding interest rates, paying income tax, and careers in finance. Learn more about the different sessions offered July 13-15 & 20-22.

FoolProof Foundation. They have partnered with Loyola Marymount University (LUM) to offer a Save it Forward program FREE to FoolProof schools. Also, from July 13 - August 17, students can work with LMU student mentors in a fun competition against other groups while completing the financial literacy concepts. You can register here (this is a 2-4 hours weekly commitment)

Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). MCTM will be holding is 72nd Annual Conference on July 27 - 28. The event will be held virtually and you can learn more about the conference schedule and speakers.

Million Bazillion podcast. If you are looking for a podcast about money for kids, this is it. They help dollars make more sense. Season 2 just launched so check out the most recent episode or past episodes from Season 1.
