A Message from Bob Henderson: May 6, 2022

Dear friends:

One of the traditions I appreciate in the Presbyterian church comes at the end of a burial service when we commend the deceased into the hands of God with these lovely words.

“Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant.

Acknowledge, we humbly pray,

a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock,

a sinner of your own redeeming.

Receive her into the arms of your mercy,

into the blessed rest of everlasting peace,

and into the glorious company of the saints in light.”

It’s acknowledgment that – in both life and death – we belong to God.

Such knowledge can be a significant source of strength, especially in trying times such as these. Amidst the social upheaval in our own country (Roe v. Wade comes to mind), wars in other countries (Russia, obviously, but others as well), and shared crises amongst countries (the environment comes to mind), faith can provide fertile ground for us to act with grace-shaped courage as we remember Jesus’ preferential concern for the most vulnerable among us.

This weekend we’ll read two passages that remind us of God’s expansive yet personal care. We’ll also hear from our fourth graders, be inspired by exquisite music, and give thanks for our mothers. Serenitye Taylor is bringing her considerable gifts to the pulpit in the Chapel service, and I will be preaching in the other services.

Come, and bring a friend.
