NYLA Conference Registration Open
Registration is now open for the 2021 New York Library Association (NYLA) conferences! The 2021 NYLA Annual Conference will take place Wednesday, November 3rd through Saturday, November 6th at the OnCenter in Syracuse NY, and the 2021 NYLA Virtual Conference will take place Thursday, October 28th and Friday, October 29th. The two-day online event will include live virtual programs, as well as a catalog of pre-recorded OnDemand content. Those who register for the in-person conference will automatically be registered for full access to the preceding virtual conference. Recognizing that some members of the library community may not be comfortable or available to attend an in-person NYLA conference this year there is an option to register for only the Virtual Conference at a reduced rate. Early bird registration ends September 30th.  
 
MHLS Member Library Presentations 
  • Highland Public Library Director, Julie Kelsall-Dempsey joins MHLS Executive Director, Rebekkah Smith Aldrich and a host of panelists for Tackle a Construction Project Successfully! This On-Demand program will be available during the Virtual Conference.  

  • Kinderhook Memorial Library Director, AnnaLee Dragon will be one of four presenters for Confronting Burnout in Libraries: Fostering Mental Wellness, Boundaries, and Advocacy in the Library. This is a half-day in-person pre-conference program held on Wednesday, November 3rd. Separate registration rates apply.  

  • Red Hook Public Library Director, Dawn Jardine and Amy Smith, Red Hook Library’s Head of Programs & Youth Services will present Prioritizing Digital Equity When Everyone Says No. This in-person program takes place on Thursday, November 4th

MHLS Library Sustainability Coordinator, Casey Conlin will begin as President of the Sustainable Thinking and Action Roundtable (START) of NYLA. Casey’s term begins at the November 2021 NYLA Conference.  

MHLS Outreach & EDI Specialist, Kerstin Cruger, is the incoming President of the Friends of Libraries Section (FLS) of NYLA. Her term starts in November 2021. Kerstin is looking forward to supporting the efforts of Friends organizations statewide recognizing their work as an integral part of their library’s connection to those they assist every day… “our Friends not only support the mission of our public libraries, but bring vitality, vision, and inspiration to the communities they serve.”

MHLS Announcements
MHLS Executive Director, Rebekkah Smith Aldrich was recently interviewed for the Library Land Podcast, Library Land Conversations. The podcast series features discussions with people from around the library community. Rebekkah was featured on episode seven to discuss sustainability in libraries. 
MHLS Libraries
Roeliff Jansen Community Library is partnering with the Columbia County Health Department to offer COVID vaccines at the library. The Columbia County Health Department will be available at the library from 10:30 am -12:00 pm on Friday, August 13th to give COVID vaccines to any eligible county residents.
Professional Development
Reserve your seat for When Anti-Racist Reading Lists Aren't Enough on Thursday, August 19th at 2:00 pm an online discussion with Dr. Nicole Cooke, the Augusta Baker Endowed Chair and an Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Science, at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Cooke will address how to move beyond simply reading and talking about issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion and move to action as library workers and library organizations to ensure we are leading our libraries forward, acting authentically, and taking concrete steps to address racism in our society.  

Sustainable Libraries
Register today for the Metro Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) Anchor Institutions Solar Program webinar taking place on Thursday, August 26th at 2:00pm. Joe Naroditsky and Joe Morris of Metro IAF Clean Energy Initiative will review the Metro IAF Anchor Institutions Solar Program which MHLS member libraries are now invited to participate in. This webinar will cover the benefits of participation in this program and how it works including leasing and purchasing models available to participating organizations, as well expectations and requirements for those organizations. There will be time available for questions at the webinar, and libraries are welcome to send questions to MHLS Library Sustainability Coordinator, Casey Conlin ahead of the program at cconlin@midhudson.org

Programming 
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is offering libraries a free digital poster exhibition, "September 11, 2001: The Day that Changed the World." 

This downloadable educational exhibition presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and its ongoing implications. The exhibition explores the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national, and international level, and encourages critical thinking about the legacy of 9/11. 

  • Digital downloads for 14 captivating posters, featuring archival photographs and images of artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection 

  • An invitation to a free virtual training, including a live virtual tour of the Museum and information on how to use the Museum's online resources to supplement the exhibition 

  • Access to the 9/11 Primer, an online collection of resources for educators and online learners, to help you supplement the exhibition

Administration & Management 
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting FY 2022 proposals for National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG-L) and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program (LB21).  

Applicants have through September 24th, 2021, to submit their two-page preliminary proposals.  

The National Leadership Grants for Libraries program supports projects that address critical needs of the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance practice in these professions to strengthen library and archival services for the American public. Successful proposals will generate results such as new models, new tools, research findings, services, practices, or alliances that will be widely used, adapted, scaled, or replicated to extend and leverage the benefits of federal investment.

Library Clerk (part-time), Kent Public Library 
The Kent Public Library in Putnam County seeks a Part-Time Library Clerk, 5 to 12 hours a week. Must have a high school degree, be experienced with computers, courteous, service oriented and able to work with the public at a busy circulation desk. Previous library experience preferred. Ability to speak Spanish would be a plus. $12.75 to 13.50 per hour, with paid vacation, sick leave and personal time. Participation in the NY state retirement system is optional. Teen/Adult Programming Coordinator (part-time), Tivoli Free Library  
The Tivoli Free Library has an immediate opening for a permanent, reliable part-time teen and adult programming coordinator. Approximately 15-20 hours per week including Saturdays and some evenings.  

As a member of our small, creative team, your job will include (but not be limited to) working alongside our children’s programming coordinator in preparing, promoting, and implementing events and programs for teens and adults in our community (in-person and virtual). You will also put in regular hours on the circulation desk, providing friendly service to library patrons.  

You will be tech literate, very comfortable with social media, have a positive attitude and the ability to function independently and as part of a team. Marketing and previous library experience a plus. Familiarity with Sierra, Canva, and WordPress also a plus.  

Salary range: $14-$15/hour depending on experience and qualifications. Some paid holidays and accrued paid time off.
