IDOT seeking temporary help to keep public safe this winter

IDOT is hiring Snow Removal Operators and Winter Salaried Highway Maintainers, also known as snowbirds, to help maintain more than 45,000 lane miles statewide during the winter season.

“The calendar says it’s summer, but we plan for winter weather 12 months a year,” said Secretary Omer Osman. “Safety is our top priority -- we’re asking individuals to consider applying for these positions to help keep our roads and bridges clear during inclement weather. In addition to providing a vitally important service, snowbirds sometimes become fulltime employees.”

Snowbirds are required to promptly respond to emerging weather situations for snow-and-ice removal and be ready to work in emergency conditions at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays.

IDOT is holding a second round of open houses for snowbirds across the state. At each open house, attendees will have a chance to speak with IDOT staff to learn more about the program and obtain assistance in submitting an application, which must be completed online. Visit here for more info.

Applicants can visit https://illinois.jobs2web.com for job postings across the state and submit an online application. No paper applications can be accepted.

Applicants must have a commercial driver’s license and submit to a criminal background check.

A pre-employment physical and vision test as well as drug and alcohol screening are required. A new law provides for a veterans’ preference for these seasonal positions and IDOT encourages veterans to apply.

Cast your vote! I-74 Mississippi River bridge up for People’s Choice Award

The new Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River, a joint project with the Iowa Department of Transportation, has been named a Top 12 finalist in the America’s Transportation Awards, the top honor for state departments of transportation from the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As one of the Top 12, our project is now in the running for the Grand Prize and the People's Choice Award. Each comes with a $10,000 prize to donate to a charity or not-for-profit of our choosing.

We need your help in bringing the People’s Choice Award home to Illinois. How? By voting online each day through Oct. 21. Every vote counts!

The winner will be announced by AASHTO on Oct. 22.

IDOT and U of I drive to increase electric vehicle use in Illinois

Region 2, District 3: Work is nearly complete on a $20.6 million project to mill and resurface nearly 7 miles of I-57, including the Buckley interchange (exit 272) in Iroquois County. The work also includes structural upgrades, underdrain removal and replacement, guardrail upgrades, and ditch grading and shaping.

The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-October.

Region 3, District 4: Team members joined Secretary Osman in early September in shining a spotlight on roadway safety at Peoria’s Dozer Park, home to the Peoria Chiefs. For three games this season, the minor league baseball team branded themselves as the Peoria Orange Barrels in honor of construction workers.

"It started when it was announced in 2020 the Murray Baker Bridge would be closed for a scheduled deck replacement," Chiefs General Manager Jason Mott said in a Peoria Journal Star article at beginning of the season. "Everywhere I went, I saw orange barrels, and we started joking around the team that we should change our name to it.

"Then we thought about it, and realized it was something we could do as a tribute to progress and hard-working construction people, and we could have some fun with."

Said Secretary Osman: “We are grateful to the Peoria Chiefs for letting us inform their fans on the importance of roadway safety, and in particular work zone safety. Driving safely through our work zones simply saves lives and with Rebuild Illinois there are more work zones throughout Illinois than ever before.”
