MISSED OUR 70TH ANNIVERARY VIRTUAL GALA?
RE-WATCH THE SHOW ON YOUTUBE

Featuring Tributes to the Big U From Around the World,
Special Musical Guests and Rare Footage of Her Floating Out
Draped in billowing red, white and blue, the SS United States was christened in front of a crowd of tens of thousands on June 23, 1951. She would go on to make maritime history as the fastest ocean liner ever built, smashing the transatlantic speed record using only two-thirds of her power.

In salute to the 70th anniversary of America's Flagship, the Conservancy was pleased to host a virtual gala LIVE on YouTube to commemorate this monumental occasion. Emceed by West Coast Chapter Co-Chairs David Perry and Mark Perry (no relation!), this special tribute event included unique contributions from our global network of supporters, a performance by Tony-nominated singer and performer Ann Hampton Callaway, a stunning computer-generated imagery tour of the SS United States, and newly-recovered video of the SS United States' floating out.

If you missed any part of the show, or you just want to re-watch it for the see the enormously entertaining repartee between our talented emcees, click the link below.

Thousands of visitors have already explored our digital exhibition, Advertising the United States: Discovering America’s Flagship Through Prints, Posters, and Advertisements and the response has been overwhelming.

Later this month we'll be announcing our next panel discussion, entitled "Opulent Crossings: Post War Tourism, Advertising, and Design." Taking place on August 11 at 6pm EST, this panel discussion will bring together scholars spanning maritime history, fashion history, and the "Ad Age" for a fascinating conversation surrounding our inaugural digital exhibition.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"The work you've done to date in securing the SS United States' future redevelopment is an incredible testament to your extraordinary efforts to save this great lady. Thank you so much everyone!"

- Bruce, an attendee during the 70th Anniversary Virtual Gala
