NCERC's Zhang Presents at 2021 AFCC Conference
NCERC's research and business development team were active at the 2021 Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition Conference, that took place November 14 - 16 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Washington, DC. Director of Research Dr. Yan Zhang presented twice at the conference during the various breakout sessions and showcased two important areas of research in the bioeconomy.

Her first presentation, titled "Low Cost Conversion of Hemp Biomass to Ethanol", and focused on an ongoing project taking place at NCERC and converts various biomass feedstocks into useful chemicals, such as ethanol, through pretreatment, hydrolysis and fermentation.

Her second presentation, titled "Biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate production from plasma oxidized non-degradable polypropylene" featured research led by NCERC Director of Fermentation Dr. Jie Dong, and showcased the results of a research project that successfully used a non-degradable plastic waste (PP) as feedstock to produce biodegradable PHA, and fulfilled the degradation and recycling of plastic waste.

In addition to Dr. Yan's presentations, NCERC Graduate Assistant Muhammad Shehu presented his research that focuses on the production an intermediate chemical for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, isoprenol.
Shehu is pursuing a graduate degree in Environmental Science.

NCERC Facility Tours Have Returned
In compliance with SIUE COVID protocol, facility tours at the NCERC have returned. In the fourth quarter of 2021, NCERC hosted nearly ten tours for groups and individuals and have plans to host multiple tour groups in 2022.

NCERC's facility poses an incredible learning opportunity for students pursuing educations in STEM fields, and is also a popular tour stop for groups touring the Edwardsville area and want to see one SIUE's most unique assets.

Those interested in scheduling a tour can do so by emailing NCERC Director of Business Development & Client Relations Jackie Hayes at jhayes@ethanolresearch.com.

Social Media Campaigns Feature Creative Approaches to Showcase Biotech
During the week leading up to Thanksgiving, NCERC utilized the expertise of its Fall intern Jonathan Schaffer to feature a #foodtech themed campaign on our social media channels. The week before the Christmas holiday break features a #woodybiomass themed campaign, paying homage to America's favorite woody biomass - the Christmas Tree!

If you don't already, be sure to follow us on our social media channels which can be accessed at the bottom of this newsletter.

We're also hiring a Marketing/PR Graduate Assistant/Intern for the Spring semester. Those interested can apply online via the link below or through the SIUE Student Employment Job Finder Portal.
ICYMI: New NCERC Promotional Videos

NCERC Staff, including Executive Director John Caupert, Director of Research Dr. Yan Zhang, Director of Fermentation Dr. Jie Dong, Director of Business Development & Client Relations Jackie Hayes, and Laboratory Project Manager Kaitlin Lasseigne gave their perspectives on the various ways NCERC strives to go above and beyond for our clients.

These videos are great tools for NCERC supporters to share NCERC's mission and activities with potential clients and collaborators.
Research Updates
Aquaculture
NCERC's research team has been working on an in-situ fermentation of corn kernel fiber with intentions to produce high-protein DDGS for use in an aquaculture feeding trial. The early results of this study were showcased at the 2021 FEW and work will continue in January with the support of students from SIUE.

Hemp to Biofuel Conversion
Work on hemp to biofuel conversion will continue this fall through funding provided to NCERC Director of Fermentation Dr. Jie Dong from a special SIUE funding program, COVID-19 Assigned Research Time, that enables assistant and associate professors to address promotion and tenure research activities that have been negatively impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Isopentenol Scale Up
As a continued effort to scale up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) conversion, NCERC has hired another graduate assistant who is assisting Dr. Dong in this area of his research throughout the academic year. This research is part of a larger group of researchers who submitted a grant proposal to the Dept of Energy's Bioenergy Technology Office in June with plans to commercialize a corn to isopentenol to SAF method. An NCERC Graduate Assistant working on this project presented a poster featuring research findings at the 2021 Alternative Fuels and Chemicals Coalition (AFCC) in November.

MSW to Biofuel Conversion
Through funding provided by SIUE’s Transitional and Exploratory Projects (STEP) grant program, NCERC will continue our research on the conversion of municipal solid waste (MSW), waste that comes from both residential and commercial sources, to biofuel. NCERC recently hired a graduate assistant to lead this research over the next academic year, with hopes that we will continue to scale up the conversion method initially established by Director of Research Dr. Yan Zhang. A special thanks to Waste Connections for providing quarterly samples of MSW!
