President's Message
Kerrie Zurovsky
As we begin a new fiscal year and term of leadership, I am honored to serve as Temple Beth Tikvah’s newest president. The past 16 months have brought about many changes in all of our lives. For me, several of these changes have been lovely surprises laced with hidden blessings and gratitude. Others, however, have come at a higher price, forcing me to search within and find hidden meanings and teachable moments. Among these, my journey with TBT has been an interesting one, especially this year as I considered the role of president.
As a mom (next year I will have one child in elementary school, one in middle school and one in high school), I feel that I have a fresh perspective to offer within our leadership. It is a strange time for parents, when we want to feel heard and seen, but we are so chronically busy with family life that at times our relationship with our synagogue suffers. We have demands and expectations of our faith community, but we lack the time and energy to see them through. It’s quite an ironic cycle, but one that I feel is key to our survival as a Jewish community. For the past four years, I have been fortunate to serve on a Board with congregants who embrace and encourage my viewpoint and who value the attitude of all our TBT families. For this, I am grateful. Most likely, this is the reason I am excited to step forward as president and serve this community in the way it has served my family these last five years.
I am thrilled to introduce your new Board: myself as President, Cere Fingerhut as Vice President, Mark Schindel as Treasurer, Lester Dober as Secretary, Jillian Frankl, Paul Spencer as Members at Large and Sheila Luber as Immediate Past President. My sincerest gratitude goes to each of these members whose collaboration and commitment to our beautiful community is admirable and inspiring.
The future of our congregation relies on the intergenerational involvement of all of its members. TBT’s lively spirit is what pulls many of us in, embracing us and keeping us engaged. It is my hope that I can help those struggling with balance in keeping TBT an integral part of their lives as well. As we navigate the coming year, readjusting post-pandemic, I think we have solid ground built by this past year’s leadership and our treasured members that can allow us all to find the path to and relationship with TBT that works for each us. I look forward to sharing the coming year with each of you with grace, patience and kindness.
Warmly,
Kerrie Zurovsky

Divrei Tikvah
From Rabbi Johanna Hershenson
The Talmud teaches that there are four New Years. One for counting years, one for counting tithes, one for the trees, and one for counting kings.
In Temple Beth Tikvah, July is the start of our fiscal year. During the spring we carefully put our efforts into developing a robust program and securing volunteers and budgeting to bring it into fruition. This fiscal year is Temple Beth Tikvah’s THIRTEENTH year in Central Oregon. It is our congregation’s Bar Mitzvah Year in Jewish language.
Dayenu—It would have been enough for us, that COVID pandemic restrictions are lessening and we are increasingly vaccinated and gathering once again—what a joy that we emerge from our home bound new-normal to a significant milestone in the life of our congregation!
What does it mean to us that our Temple is entering its adolescence on the landscape of Jewish civilization? Are we meeting our mission to be a vibrant center of:
• Torah—lifelong Jewish learning,
• Avodah—ritual practice balanced between poles of tradition and innovation, and
• Gemilut Chasadim—extending kindness to one another and our neighbors?
And, what’s next for us? How might we choose to mature into adulthood? It is my hope, as rabbi, that reaching this milestone as a congregation becomes a topic of conversation throughout the course of the year.
We’ve designed our program around the Jewish values we hold dear: learning, ritual practice, and extending kindness. Take a peek at the offerings we’ve scheduled so far…
|
How will each of us choose to engage in our milestone year of transition from immaturity to maturity? Let’s agree to give it a think while we float the river, paddle board alpine lakes, and begin meeting up with each other in backyard barbecues and summer celebrations.
I wish each and every one of us a lovely summer of connecting with family and friends and recreating—resting and playing together.
B'virkat Shalom

Chevruta: Weekly Torah Study
Through the Lens of Mussar Masters
|
Sundays at 9:00 - 10:15 am
July 11 - Summer of 2022
Zoom
What is a Chevruta? Chevruta (pronounced chev-roo-ta) is a group of adults committed to lifelong Jewish learning together, where camaraderie and friendships are cultivated through discourse. A fitting name for TBT’s adult education group!
The Chevruta topic, the Chasidic Masters, ended on Sunday, June 27 and we are now transitioning into a new area of study. Starting Sunday, July 11, Rabbi Johanna Hershenson will lead a weekly Torah study through the lens of Mussar Masters.
Having dabbled in wisdom of the Chasidic Masters, we will now turn to the Mussar, written by those who opposed the inherent criticism of intellectualism in populist Chasidic movements. The Litvak (Lithuanian) rabbis provided a viable alternative to meet an emerging hunger for spiritual practice in a legalistic Jewish establishment.
Mussar is best described as a character development practice. Its rabbis taught that the ethics we derive from our sacred stories and legal codes call us to behave differently in the world and in relationship with others.
Come, let's study together!

Education Report
Melissa Wikler

Hello TBT families,
The last few Sunday school sessions have been absolutely heartwarming as we were able to bring our community together for Outdoor Religious School. After a year filled with challenges and isolation, being with all of our students, teachers, and seeing parents in person was a complete joy.
We are now busy planning for our 2021-2022 school year which will be all in person and back to pre-covid vibes. I would like to give some shout outs to all that made this year work despite the challenges. A shout out to our phenomenal teachers who brought high quality education to all students despite the challenges present in a virtual learning environment. A shout out to our students and their families who rolled along with all the changes and transitions presented this year and came to classes excited and ready to learn. A shout out to our Religious school Governance Committee for their dedication and hard work in planning and implementing this year. Thank you for all you do!
We are planning the 2021-2022 school year with anticipation for coming together in person once again. I have included a link to a pre-registration survey for the upcoming school year. If you are planning on enrolling students next year and have not already completed this survey please take a moment to do so. Registration information will be sent out in August via email.
Thank you and have a fantastic summer!

About Temple Beth Tikvah
For Jewish families, retirees and singles at every level of faith in Central Oregon, Temple Beth Tikvah provides a comforting embrace for the soul of your DNA. We are a dynamic Reform Jewish congregation with friendly, giving, active people drawn to Bend and Central Oregon because of the active lifestyle we find here.
We come together in different ways, inspired and informed by our common thread of Jewishness. Whether you were born Jewish, love someone who is Jewish or choose to be Jewish. Practice Judaism a little, a lot or not at all. TBT can serve as the heart of your vibrant, connected life.
We can be your primary source of friendship, purpose, spiritual and intellectual pursuit. Or a side note adding flavor and dimension how and when you want. Whichever you choose, TBT offers an inclusive, communal foundation on which to build your relationships, experiences and practice. From social activities to social action, worship to study, participation to leadership. It's your choice, in this community of yours.
