Summer Construction Activities at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Pave the Way for Increased Capacity in the Future
Motorists advise to Drive Safely and Drive Informed
NORFOLK, VA – The summer tourism season, combined with locals traveling around the region and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project construction, means increased traffic through the project corridor.

With the increase of activity, motorists are encouraged to drive safely and drive informed through the HRBT Expansion Project. Motorists can expect additional traffic shifts, detours, daytime and nighttime lane closures as crews perform construction activities during the summer months. Construction areas include, but are not limited to, work to widen the I-64 bridges over W. Evans Street; Mallory Street Bridge construction over I-64; and work on the North and South Islands as they prepare for the arrival of Mary the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).

“The summer construction season also coincides with summer vacations. Over 100,000 vehicles travel through the HRBT Tunnel daily at the peak of the summer season,” said Jim Utterback, Project Director for the HRBT Expansion Project. “It is important to be aware of work zones to improve safety for motorists and workers.”

The HRBT Expansion Project offers a number of tools for motorists traveling through the project corridor to use whether traveling to work or a tourist location:

The HRBT Expansion Project will widen I-64 from near Settlers Landing Road in Hampton to the I-564 Interchange in Norfolk. The project includes the addition of twin two-lane bored tunnels, new marine trestle bridges, and bridge and roadway widening along 10 miles of I-64. The project aims to increase capacity, ease major congestion, increase safety and boost regional tourism.
