Who benefits from brain training, and why?
A joint UCI and UC Riverside study shows "near transfer" predicts "far transfer." “If we can understand how and for whom brain-training apps work, we can improve them to get more out of them than just fun," said Professor Susanne Jaeggi, member of the research team and coauthor of Near transfer to an unrelated N-back task mediates the effect of N-back working memory training on matrix reasoning.
OCEAN co-hosted conference strengthens support system for foster and housing insecure youth
The event focused its efforts on improving knowledge of social services and programs available to support youth and families, and strengthening relationships between professionals for greater coordination and responsiveness to youth needs.
Celebrating George Farkas
Distinguished Professor George Farkas, whose tenure at UCI began in 2008 and extensive career spanned 50 years, retired to "emeritus on recall" status in spring. Among many of his contributions to the field of sociology and educational research, he was one of the first to identify that school achievement gaps emerge in early childhood.
MAT’s Bilingual Authorization Program graduates its inaugural class
The BAP, offered through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) + Credential Program, allows candidates to add a Bilingual Authorization to their Multiple Subject Credential, equipping MAT students to successfully teach in dual immersion programs.
Tyrone Howard featured speaker at Inspiring Talk for Educators
During Teacher Appreciation Week in early May, the UCI Teacher Academy hosted Dr. Howard at the Inspiring Talk for Educators webinar which honored teachers for their commitment to K-12 youth.
Bavarian legislators visit the Digital Learning Lab
Parliament members of the German state were introduced to the lab and its effort working toward computer science education for all. “We feel that if you wait until high school for computer education, it’s too late,” said DLL Director and Professor Mark Warschauer. “By then kids’ identities, their interests, their capacities are already developed."

Mariya Vodyanyk's Feasibility and Preliminary Effects of a Novel, Integrative Art-Based Intervention to Promote Visuospatial Reasoning and Well-Being in Older Adults is one of eight early-stage research projects selected for the award. Professor Susanne Jaeggi is PI; Vodyanyk is Co-I.
Ph.D. student awarded Graduate Innovation Fellowship
The fellowship committee selected Alexandria Weaver based on her academic research, extracurricular activities, and participation and experience in creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Researcher and WMP lab manager receives staff scholarship
Guicheng "Ariel" Tan plans to use the scholarship to support her professional development, with an eye towards her grad school application journey and to strengthen her study design.
2022 WMP Lab Annual Symposium and awards ceremony
More than 70 attendees engaged with the 35 students/student groups who presented their work at the 5th annual symposium.
Spring awards reception
In May, the School recognized four Class of 2022 graduates at the annual spring reception honoring the winners of the Michael E. Martinez Prize for Outstanding Research and Service and the Keith Curry Awards.
Undergraduate student wins campus-wide pitch challenge
“Students’ Engagement and Motivation in Number Ball” focused on Jessica P. Lopez Perez's work with second-grade teachers to create a playful learning landscape using Number Ball, which was designed to provide K-2 students with additional opportunities to build fluency with whole numbers.
Doctoral student named Outstanding DECADE Representative
The award recognizes Valery Vigil’s accomplishments and contributions to the Diverse Educational Community and Doctoral Experience, including her leadership of the DECADE council.

CFEP News
The Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP) – a robust unit within the School of Education – creates collaborations that support student preparation for and success in higher education. The CFEP's programs support K-12 teacher and student development, transfer students, and UCI undergraduates from all majors. With the support of the CFEP, the School of Education is creating opportunities for students to achieve the American Dream.
Assistant Vice-Chancellor named Dynamic Womxn of the Year
The UCI Womxn’s Center for Success bestowed the honor on Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio. The award recognizes her significant contribution to the UCI community.
WACUBO Service Project Raises $11,500 in STEM Kits and Athletic Equipment
The project donated the items to the Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy, a middle school that serves military families in the Colorado Springs area.
