A Message from Florida Chamber Safety Council
Executive Director Jason Mozo, J.D.
|
|
Hello,
I hope all of you and your families had a wonderful and safe July 4th holiday weekend!
The Florida Chamber Safety Council continues to do some amazing things! We are growing our partnerships with leading manufactures and vendors on safety supplies to help provide the necessary equipment to keep workers safe on the job. We have just expanded our virtual safety trainings that are open to the public, view safety trainings here. These virtual trainings will make it more convenient for you and your employees to earn CEUs and stay up tp date on the latest safety procedures at the comfort of your office or home without the undue stress of travel. Our private safety trainings also continue to grow. If you need onsite safety training, please email me here to schedule.
Our Safety of the Month topic for July is Operator Safety Training for Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklifts), Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (Boom & Scissor Lifts) and Heavy Equipment. Unfortunately, the average annual fatality rate on Forklifts is over 100 a year, over 25 deaths related to Boom and Scissor Lifts, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor reports that the fatality rate on heavy equipment can be as high as 400 deaths a year. This can all be lowered by proper Operator Safety Training, period! Proper training consists of two required categories….1. Classroom Training, which involves lectures, class discussions, video segments and written examinations, and then 2. Practical Evaluations which is hands-on training on the equipment, inspections, and proper operating procedures.
Let’s stop the upward trend of these fatalities in Florida and work together on providing the necessary trainings to your employees. We are offering discounts of up to 35% off our Operator Safety Training classes for the month of July. Email me at jmozo@flchamber.com to schedule a training class. Nothing is more important than doing our jobs safely, so we go home to our families and loved ones each and every day. And always remember, safety is no accident!

Florida's Latest Data on Safety, Health & Sustainability
|
|
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020,
Safety
The construction industry was responsible for the highest number of workplace fatalities from 2011 to 2018. When industries are evaluated based on the number of fatalities per 100,000 workers, construction in Florida is statistically the third most dangerous industry behind agriculture and extraction industries. However, the number of workers in the construction industry far outnumbers agriculture and extraction. Detailed data for the construction industry, including culling the event data specifically for construction, reveals areas for focus. In the last eight years, most construction deaths involved falls, slips, or trips.
Health
Florida had higher prescription rates per 100 people than the national average throughout the first wave of the epidemic. Florida had some of highest concentrations of “pill mills” across the country in the mid 2000s. Pill mills refer to pain management clinics where excess opioids were dispensed, and these medications were often diverted into the black market. Over the course of 2010 and 2012, the State of Florida acted to reduce the abuse of opioids with the passage of several regulations aimed at curtailing pill mills. The legislation regulated pain clinics and barred physicians from dispensing schedule II and III opioids. These efforts are reflected in the data as Florida’s prescription rate dropped significantly during this time. The state saw a 17 percent decrease in opioid overdose deaths from 2010 to 2012 after these laws went into effect (WCRI 2019a). Other counteractive measures taken in Florida include the creation of a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) database. The statewide PDMP database became operational in 2011 and its use was declared mandatory by July 2018. The supply for a patient’s first opioid prescription has been limited to three to seven days. The state also requires continuing medical education of opioid prescribing for providers to renew their license (WRCI 2019a).
Sustainability
Water consumption per capita is a metric of water use efficiency. It is measured by comparing water use over time and standardized by the population of each state. Florida uses less water per person than the national average, ranking 18th lowest in water consumption per capita. This reveals that in general, Florida uses water relatively efficiently.
