Worship with us this Sunday

Worship with us inside or outside. 8:00am and 9:00am celebrations of the Holy Eucharist will be inside in the Nave. The 9:15am Wee Worship and 11:15am celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be outside in the Courtyard! We’re celebrating Earth Day by worshiping in God’s creation for the next few weeks. Bring a sweater and/or sunscreen and join us!

Healing Prayer will be available this Sunday, May 8th at the 9:00am (St. Aidan’s Chapel) and 11:15am service (outside, location to be announced) during Communion. Prayers for yourself or another are welcome, and a healing minister will be happy to talk to you about anything on your heart

This Sunday we're literally signing a letter of support and love to our friends at Janney Elementary after the administration was targeted in the national news for their efforts in addressing racism. Please come by the Common to help create a bit of art and show our church's love and support!

Welcome to our Third Afghan Family!

The Refugee Response Ministry (RRM) is sharing the great news that St. Columba's is sponsoring a third Afghan family--the Amini family. Can you help with the Move and Home Set Up this Saturday, May 7th? We need volunteers in the morning to load furniture and in the afternoon to set up the Amini home.

We're grateful for your warm welcome of the Basery family pictured here with St. C's welcome banner. They are excited to be joined in the same apartment complex by their friends the Aminis. Both families are helping with the move! If you are available for even two hours on Saturday, contact RRM Housing Chair, Emma Hersh (emma.hersh@gmail.com).

“The Book of Joy” Book Group
When: Every other Tuesday beginning May 17 at 6:50pm on Zoom

Read and discuss "The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu with St. C's twice-monthly Tuesday book group, led by Deacon David Griswold, beginning May 17 on Zoom, 6:50 to 8pm. Read more about the book from Ledlie's Easter sermon: The redemptive love of God revealed in Easter does not remove pain or sin or death – clearly. But it does reveal the way of salvation whereby we can live in pain, with sin, and death, yet live with love, forgiveness, joy, and yes – new life. Some years ago, Archbishop Desmond Tutu traveled to Dharamsala to spend a week with the Dalai Lama in celebration of the latter’s eightieth birthday. The Book of Joy recounts their time together – a mix of wisdom, beauty, and a lot of laughter! Each spoke of this tension – holding suffering with compassion as the way to joy – and redemption.

Parish News
May 4th was the Seabury Celebration of Service at the National Cathedral and St. Columba's honoree was Debbie DuSault (pictured on left with Michele Prince, Pastoral Care Coordinator). This summer, we’ll welcome two seminarians on board our team. Read their bios below, and join us in giving them a warm welcome - they’ll both be in attendance at the 9am and 11:15am services this Sunday.
My name is Mitchell Felton and I am a rising senior at the Trade School by the Potomac (Virginia Theological Seminary). I am hoping to become a better Pastor, Preacher, and friend this summer and can't think of a better place than St. Columba's to do this at. I am looking forward to our summer adventure together!
My name is Brian Fu (he/him) and I'm a first-year seminarian at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C., just a few blocks from St. Columba's. I was raised in the United Methodist Church, so I'm very much looking forward to serving as an intern in a tradition different from what I've primarily been exposed to. I have a deep appreciation and fascination with the tradition and intentionality of Episcopalian liturgy, so I'm most excited to observe and learn the ins-and-outs of St. C's worship styles and practices.

Welcome and an Invitation

If you are reading this newsletter for the first time or if you have been coming to St. Columba’s for a few Sundays, Welcome. Perhaps you have been away for a while and are returning or you are a parishioner that has been in our community for decades. Welcome. We are a big church and there are people we know and many we don’t. If you have a name button, it would be wonderful if you would wear it. If you do not yet have one or have lost yours, add your name to one of the clipboards and a new one will be waiting for you next week.

“As the church we are the living body instituted by Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit to invite others to know, love, and serve him. This is why hospitality matters. We are the hands and feet of Christ.” Please take a moment to introduce yourself to someone this Sunday that might be at church by themselves, someone you may not have met, or even the person whose name you forgot from last week. Invite them to join you for a cup of coffee or a donut on the front porch or in the courtyard after the services. It is a gift and a blessing to forge connections.
