To all PCMS members, thank you for your work this year
I want to thank all PCMS members for your hard work this year for your patients and our community. As another year comes to an end that was marked by challenges of COVID-19, it's more important than ever to rest, relax and reflect on your good work and start 2022 fresh.
I also encourage you to attend our upcoming PCMS 5th Annual Symposium on Feb. 26, 2022. With physician burnout at an all-time high, consider attending in person to network with colleagues you’ve not seen or heard from in nearly two years. We hope to help everyone feel more connected to help find the joy in medicine again through this event and others next year.
The PCMS Board of Directors has provided many volunteer hours this year meeting monthly to put together the best events yet. Please attend! And if you have ideas for events or speakers in 2022, send them to Cheryl. We're on the lookout for a good (and clean) comedian for our annual meeting.
Once again, I wish you a peaceful holiday season and happy New Year!

A follow-up on misinformation and an opportunity to build back from the bottom
Recently, we have received questions about the intention of the letter penned by the Colorado Medical Society in support of the fight against misinformation. I would encourage you to please view a presentation by Dr. Matthew Wynia (starting at 1:04:42 in the Zoom recording) during which he spoke about ethics in medicine and addressed misinformation. I, personally, cannot stress enough the importance of our words as leaders in medicine. The data is clear. The unvaccinated are the overwhelming majority of those dying or suffering complications from COVID-19. The ERs are full. The hospitals are struggling. Burnout is at an all-time high. This is not sustainable. Let us all remember the principles of medical ethics: autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Our words matter. Our guidance matters. We dedicate a significant portion of our lives to understanding the human body and science in a way few others do. You matter, and your patients listen to you.
If you are not contributing to the solution -- the betterment of our society as a whole, the health and wellbeing of our community, and the advancement of medicine in general -- then you are instead a part of the problem. We are at the precipice of the future of medicine. Mentors, attendings, friends and colleagues have all said for quite some time that the system is broken. I have been told or overheard just as frequently as of late that they’ve never seen it this bad before. If this is truly the bottom, then we are in a unique position to build a better system from the bottom up. This is the time to step up and make a difference. As 2021 comes to an end, let’s take the opportunity in 2022 to be better and be our best selves.
I wish you all a merry Christmas and happy New Year.
