CWA BIOLOGISTS SEARCHING COVER CROPS FOR MALLARD NESTS
CWA biologists have been hard at work monitoring wild duck nests in Sacramento Valley cover crop fields - part of research we're doing in partnership with the California Rice Commission into how wild ducks use agricultural fields for this critical part of their life cycle.

Click here to listen to a new CalRice podcast discussing our work, and here for a photo gallery of recent efforts.

This research is just part of the work that our incredible Egg Salvage Program team does each spring and summer, this year generously funded by a Sitka Ecosystem Grant.
WHEAT PROGRAM: SAFE HAVEN FOR DUCKLINGS
It was a tough, dry spring for breeding mallards in California. But thanks to CWA's Delayed Wheat Harvest Incentive Program, there were about 1,250 acres of wheat and triticale in the Central Valley where ducks could build nests, incubate the eggs and lead their ducklings to nearby rice water without a harvester interfering with the process.

Today marks the day when farmers can begin harvesting fields they enrolled in the program, which pays incentives to offset risk such as increased fire hazard and crop degradation. Harvest dates set for July 1-15 ensured that most ducklings should be out of the field before the combines roll. That extra bit of grace from wildlife-friendly farmers made a big difference in the drought-parched 2021 landscape.

California Waterfowl piloted this program last year using donations from generous supporters, but with the goal of securing government grants to increase its scope. The good news is CWA received word recently that the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be making a similar program available in 2022. In addition, a CWA-sponsored bill in the Legislature would add state funding to expand this and other gamebird nest cover projects.
