Our Mission Is To Maintain And Strengthen The City's Diversity, Equity, And Accountability.
Greetings!

Sometimes I can hardly believe that it's only been a year since LA Civil Rights was officially announced - and less than 8 months that we've officially been established.

Back in the early days when it was just me and a handful of volunteers, we knew that there was no time to wait - we needed to get to work building justice and equity right away.

It can be hard to understand our true impact. However, there are some ways you can measure LA Civil Rights by the numbers.

In Year One, we have:
  • Led over 90 commission and ad-hoc committee meetings,
  • Participated in over 300 community meetings and discussions,
  • Hosted 15 public events on racial equity, COVID resources for immigrants, youth engagement and more, reaching thousands of viewers,
  • Dedicated over 4,000 physical ad spaces for our LA for All campaign, the largest city-run, multilingual PSA campaign against hate in city history,
  • Co-hosted 3 community vaccine drives, helping hundreds of Angelenos get protected from COVID-19,
  • and much, much more.

It has been quite a first year for our department. We are so grateful to everyone who has helped us on this journey - from the Mayor, to City Council, to the community organizations on the ground. We look forward to working with even more folks as we continue to grow and expand in Year Two.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

- Capri Maddox

Growing Community Bonds at Kedren Health
This month, we teamed up with Kedren Health, the Korean Food Global Association, Korean Cultural Center, the Korean Consulate and more for a free food giveaway to frontline healthcare workers at Kedren Community Health Center! Korean Food Global Association brought 200 boxes of traditional Korean meals to thank the hard-working doctors and nurses on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis, and to foster strong relationships between the Korean and African American communities. Read more in the LA Sentinel.

Events like these are what LA for All is all about - fostering belonging and inclusion across Los Angeles. Thank you to everyone who joined, and to everyone who has been getting vaccinated at Kedren. Looking for your shot? Find COVID-19 information and sign up for a free vaccine here.
New Leadership at the Human Relations Commission
This week, the Human Relations Commission (HRC) held its regular leadership election to determine the Commissioners who will guide the 55-year-old Commission in its next year. We are excited to congratulate President Anthony Mack, Vice President Stacy Twilley and Second Vice President Angelica Solis-Montero for being elected to the leadership team! We know that under their guidance, the Human Relations Commission will have a productive and meaningful year ahead.

We also want to congratulate and thank outgoing President Angelica Solis-Montero. Over the past year, Commissioner Solis-Montero has led the Human Relations Commission with grace and resolve. Even during a pandemic, the HRC didn't skip a beat, holding virtual meetings, dinner dialogues, and was even featured recently in the LA Times. She is now stepping into the 2nd VP role, and we are grateful for her continued service!

Know Your Rights Training Recap
Our latest Know Your Rights & Bystander Intervention Training had a record turnout! More than four dozen people joined our virtual training session to learn more about stopping and preventing hate in our communities. We are so grateful to Human Relations Commissioner Stacy Twilley for moderating, and all our panelists from the Philippine American Bar Association, LAPD, PESA and more.

Missed the training? Join the next one! We hold these trainings on the last Tuesday of every month - next training on August 31.

Crucial Conversations on COVID-19
On Monday, August 2nd, join California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Tomás Aragón for a training on how to have proactive conversations about getting vaccinated.

As the Delta variant spreads, far too many people remain unvaccinated and at risk of serious illness. Getting our communities vaccinated is the best way to stop the spread - and having productive and informative conversations around the COVID-19 vaccine is key. Join health experts for this enlightening training.
